Cat’s weight keeps fluctuating.

General Advice

For some background, my cat (12F) was the same weight for years and was always consistently between 12.8 and 13 pounds. In recent years, she stabilized more on the 12.8 end.

But last year she was diagnosed with pre-hyperthyroidism and we immediately put her on meds. During that time she averaged between 12.5 and her normal 12.8. No big deal.

Flash forward to almost a year later and she was averaging about 12.5 consistently for months, but this summer I’m lucky if I can get her up that high. These past few weeks she’s jumped between 12 and 12.3, with the rare 12.4 or 12.5 thrown in. I weigh her multiple times per day to account for weight lost after using the litter box.

She’s still taking her thyroid meds twice per day and her bloodwork always comes back with normal thyroid levels, so this shouldn’t just be a result of the thyroid issues. She previously had some dental work, but I brush her teeth and give her dental treats to keep that clean.

She definitely is still eating, maybe not a ton, but enough. I’ve noticed this summer it’s harder to get her to eat a lot at once. She grazes a lot (both wet and dry food) and never finishes an entire portion at once. I have to slowly feed her multiple times per day and she does sometimes refuse unless I try multiple times. I read in summer cats naturally eat less, but not sure if that’s true.

I’m at my wit’s end trying to figure out if this is a serious issue and if her weight will just keep going down. She has a vet appointment next week, but I’m worried she’ll drop below 12 pounds by then.

TLDR: given her medical history and other factors like the time of year and just the natural aging process, am I just being neurotic? How can I get her weight up and make sure she’s eating consistently? I’ve tried the tiki cat high calorie pouches and those are great, but she won’t eat them consistently.
