[3474] Testament to the Glowing East - The Father (1 of 2)

Testament to the Glowing East is the working title of a six-story post-apocalyptic horror anthology set in the same world. The opening story of which is titled "The Father" I broke it up into two chunks, so this is the first half of that story. I'm open to all feedback but would also like to know how you feel it works as an opening to an anthology.
