Strictly indoor cat need heartworm preventive?

I brought my cat to get his updated vaccines, also came to get some gabapentine for a move we will be having. My vet told me that because Im moving to the southern east coast, that heartworm is huge and needs flea medication with heartworm preventative.

First time Im hearing this and was wondering if that is something I should make sure my cat has.
