Why YOU SHOULD THANK ME WHEN IM AT WORKKKKK

I've seen so much discourse on TikTok where people ask why they should thank employees for just doing their job and as someone who has been working retail for who knows how long and is unnecessarily resentful when I get a thank you, I finally have an answer!

The rational behind not thanking workers for doing their job is honestly a justifiable one. When you're at the mall, for instance, and a random person holds the door for you, you say thank you because they're going out of their way to perform an action that benefits me. They're not receiving anything of value (beyond feeling like a good person but let's ignore that).

So if we thank people for performing actions that they're not expected to do, why should i be thanking workers for doing their job?

The answer that my friends I came up with is that it literally does NOT matter WHY you're doing the job. I don't care if you're getting paid money or that someone has threatened you so that your family will be hurt if you don't serve me or that you're doing this because you're just a good person doing good things. I'm thanking you for performing an action that directly benefits me. What you have done in the moment or intend to do is directly benefiting me or someone that I care about so I'm thanking you for performing that service full stop. I don't care why you're doing it, just that you are and that it's helping me.

Perhaps this is a simple thought, but I wanted to share my thoughts on expressing gratitude in a monetary setting!
