It's IMPOSSIBLE to get a job here as a foreigner, and it's driving me insane.
So I'm a Korean citizen, but I live and grew up here in the Philippines since I was 2 years old. I went to primary, secondary, and tertiary school here, and I consider the Philippines my home. I'm so assimilated into the country and its culture that my Filipino friends always tell me they forget I'm not Filipino.
So I feel SO defeated and and hopeless and demotivated that the Philippines is making it SO HARD for me to get a job here. I graduated 2 years ago majoring in a social development course as it was my goal to help the Philippines develop. Took a minor in sustainability and got part time jobs during college in environmental organizations because I wanted to help protect the Philippine environment.
But no one told me that it'd be damn near impossible (or outright impossible atp) for me to get a job here if you're a "recently graduated" foreigner because of visa issues. I know it's not because of a lack of skill because 1.) I apply to several entry level roles, 2.) I relatively had more experience than the average fresh grad as I even co-founded my own non profit org, 3.) I graduated with latin honors at a top university and was always an achiever in school, 4.) I've already had a couple of offers, all of which had to be rescinded due to visa complications (one of them I even already signed and notarized the contract but it got pulled back).
I've tried everything. Applied to jobs even if it's not a role I wanted, applied to bigger companies & organizations who have the capacity to sponsor visas. For one of the offers I got, I was willing to shell out the costs of and process my work visa myself as the org couldn't. Keep in mind a work visa costs around 60k per year (or more, not sure because information online is so inconsistent). But the other requirements to get the visa are too much (like having to have the company prove that they're hiring me because no Filipino fits the criteria).
I also considered working in Korea, but because I grew up here, I can't speak the language that well, so that would make working there difficult, if not also impossible. Also all my friends are here. I considered moving to Australia with a working holiday visa, but I figured I'd just come across the same problem of not being able to find a job because I heard from my friend who lives there that it's also difficult there. I've run out of options and didn't know what to do.
I did manage to get a remote job as an Events and Partnerships Manager, but after a while I quit because the work quickly became very boring and I got burned out, and it was supposed to be temporary anyways. So now I'm back in the job market and I hate everything about it. I know it's already hard for regular people, so it's basically impossible for me here. I even explored the idea of turning my nonprofit into a social enterprise, but the logistics and legalities and fees are way too much for me to do by myself. So I've given up on that too. I don't know what to do. I don't know what I CAN do.
I could just keep applying to remote jobs, but I can't help but feel like a failure. If I knew this was all I could do, why did I even bother going to college and studying what I did? Did I really get a degree at a prestigious university only to end up becoming some VA or whatever?
