I left customer service 1 year ago but this random lady still made me seethe
I worked in a call center for 5 years through college. It absolutely sucked. I enjoyed my coworkers, and I enjoyed working from home. That said, the management was awful. The callers were...something straight out of the 7th circle of hell.
This role was tech and billing support. Most everyone was a confused, frustrated old person who wanted to yell at someone but also couldn't fucking figure out how to open a Chrome tab, share their screen on zoom, delete their cache, or reset their password through their account settings. It was like witnessing 0% technical literacy and 100% Karen entitlement, all day, every day.
I finally graduated college and got a real adult job 10 months ago. Corporate America has been going alright. Much better than call centers.
Over this past weekend, I had tickets to see the Manhatten Short Film Fest. I pulled into town 30 minutes before my show time. There was a Chili's next to the theater, so I decided to go in and have a margarita and some chips before the film fest.
I was sitting alone at the bar, enjoying the football game.
All of a sudden, I hear this grating sound behind me. "HELLO DO YOU WORK HERE???"
the passing employee pauses, apologizes, and explains theyre off the clock currently but able to help (what a saint). The Old Croney starts ranting about how she hasn't been served, no one has come to her table, blah blah.
The Off Clock Employee explains she, unfortunately, sat herself in a section that has no waiter (theres a gigantic sign up front saying not to seat yourself, so apparently the poor thing is also illiterate). The Off Clock Employee happily says they can escort her to the host to be re-sat.
This fully adult 60 year old crusty throws a temper tantrum about that for a few minutes. Then, she decides to sit a the bar. Right next to me.
She huffs and puffs her obese body beside me. "Sorry!" She exclaims. "Can I even fit in here? WOW, these waiters do NOT make it easy HAHAHAHHAHA".
I immediately disengage. She is a type of person I hate. Old, slow, stupid, but absolutely sucking the air out of a room and demanding attention/special handling from everyone she interacts with. Fragile, but also stupid. A nasty combination. Someone who HAS to be acknowledged. HAS to be known. HAS to be coddled. Acting like a 4 year old with white hair and wrinkles. Customer service folks, you know what I mean.
I dealt with them for years. Sobbing uncontrollably because THEY couldnt figure out the two step process to reset their account password. Screaming at ME for not checking their bank balance for 6 months of charges. Always old. Always a certain look. Always angry. Always entitled. Always mean. Sorry for being honest about pattern recognition. Downvote if you want.
She gets a menu, and makes a big production of takinf a paper napkin (??) to wipe down every page of the menu. Yes, the menus are sticky. You're at Chili's.
"OH, waiter? Your drink prices arent on the menu HOW CAN I EVER KNOW HOW MUCH THE PRICE IS?? 🫨 nevermind, I'm too upset, I'll have a club soda with one orange slice."
"OH waiterrrr, what are the "chicken fajitas"? Do you use pre mixed guacamole? With all that...junk??? Or is it FRESH??"
At some point she gets bored and lonely enough, she turns to me for attention. "OH, do you have enough room? I can scoot down...they just SHOVED ME IN HERE, no table, nothing, isnt it AWFUL 🎭"
But at this point my blood was already boiling. I've talked to a thousand of her. Copy and pasted. Just fat and rich and lonely and entitled and annoying and clueless. But I dont work at the call center anymore. I make my own money, from my own skills. Fuck her. Fuck her stereotype. And her shite.
I rolled my eyes at her. In her face. I said "it's a chair, calm the fuck down."
She was horrified. Eyes stretched, mouth agape. Good. Fuck her.
There's a certain type of privileged person. They act clueless. Like it's their first day out on the planet. Zero awareness. Yet pandering for attention. Sucking air out of any room. Demanding special treatment, special attention. It's not a cry for help. It's a power play to be coddled. And I'm sick of it.
Thanks for the rant.
She ended up moving to the dining room shortly after. I hope her meal was awful.
