As someone from myanimelist best puts it, read this as Chapter 0 and it will make a lot more sense.
But then the previous chapter would be the ending of the manga and thus the ending would suck (more)
Ooo, it finished? Now I can finally dig into it. :3
(Before haters gonna hate, I just prefer reading completed series.)
It was a rather interesting way to end the manga...I guess? I mean, it was at least a little different, right? I don't feel like anyone particularly needed it spelled out for them that she wasn't right in the head, but seeing the world through her eyes was, for lack of a better word, "nice" for a change.
I am quite disappointed we never actually get to know what happened to Nakamura during their time apart though. In my opinion, considering how undeniably important she is to the overall story, it just feels like a weirdly large chunk of story to omit.
Well, I certainly wouldn't call it one of my favorite manga, but it quite compelling from time to time. I'd probably have to give it a solid 7/10.
This manga was weird. I took it as a mostly normal kid who really like dark and abstract things got tangled up with a girl that was insane.
I really liked how the last chapter showed her insanity. Her perception of the world totally altered her interactions with it.
I had always thought that Nakamura's outbursts were because she either had been, or was currently being, sexually abused. Severe depression, suicidal urges, anger and distrust of authority figures, and acting out their own sexual abuse on other children are all pretty common behavior patterns. The sexual tinge to most of the humiliation she dishes out always seemed way too specific to just be something a junior high kid comes up with independently.
So, nothing is confirmed by this chapter, but when we're ending the story with pages like this, I feel like my interpretation is probably right. That's some real purposeful rape imagery.
Similarly, when Nakamura enters her house, the blackness that she sees people as is much stronger, swirling around the room and intruding in on her.
Though the imagery could fit very well, I was more under the impression that Nakamura had a broken, warped vision of the world stemming from her mother abandoning her and her father to go with another man. At times she would let slip some references to this, if I remember correctly, when screaming to Kasuga "to go and be like the rest and just think about sex sex sex". (though that line could also apply to your theory) Untrustworthy, fake, selfish: she sees the world as she sees her mother.
Working with her mother by the end of the story would hint at some sort of closure or peace, maybe. She's a broken woman but doesn't seem to be angry anymore. I find the ending very frustrating because I cared more for Nakamura than for Kasuga, and we don't get much insight behind her misanthropy.
I think the idea behind the last chapter was to show how she saw in Kasuga a human honest with his perverted side, a "real" human. It's kinda... pointless, as it says nothing new, but allowed for some really cool imagery.
Damn, it took a trip to the chapter discussion on myanimelist to truly understand this chapter and what this manga is based on.
Awesome, thanks!
I dont even know what happened. Im so...what?!?
Ending was a little disappointing...
I would of been happy if it ended with Ch. 56. But like this ending doesnt make any sense.
I was hoping for something else, but oh well... this ending is the first chapter from Nakamura perspective ?

Decent closure for people who were still hoping to see a little more out of Nakamura. The manga has pretty much been on its last leg for the past few chapters, and its understandable to see the author end it like this, if you ask me.
Love it. Love it forever. It's like complex music, it doesn't resolve all tension, and that leaves you feeling something about it long after you've closed the tab. Everything is there to be seen in visual allegory, and yet it's not clear-cut about the things that don't matter. Was Nakamura abused? Or just experiencing sexual guilt? Was she actually seeing bees? It doesn't matter, because the reason you enjoyed the story isn't because it gave you a list of facts about this sequence of lies, these fictional characters, it's because it drew a picture of an obsessive relationship and you lapped it up. It'd be nice if they could have completed the manga on-screen, in all its uncomfortable rotoscoped ugly beauty, but the second half just isn't 'drama' enough to grab a respectable audience. This finally unseated Welcome To The NHK as my favourite manga of all time.
That's a good ending, though the true ending is the previous chapter where he dreamt about the future, which is probably how things gonna turn out anyway. This chapter is a nice bridge with the beginning, a reminder of how things started out and Nakaruma's mentality at the beginning.
I probably could have paid more attention to the story or other comments to understand the significance of his sitting down to write at the end. Maybe he's found his muse again, maybe this maybe that. I'm not so sure.
The three of them, Tokiwa, Nakamura, and the MC all yearn for a similar thing. But they vary in terms of adjustment to society, with Nakamura at the bottom and Tokiwa at the top, being able to juggle multiple identities. What MC initially sought with Nakamura, he also found in Tokiwa. Nakamura also no longer lives in the darkness that she did at the beginning of the series.
There are still a lot of things that I don't fully understand about the series, but the author has given us enough to work with. Works like this don't give definitive messages, we have to interpret what we can. Like Dark Souls I & II.
Although i quite like the ending, it was also unfair for Kasuga who got better life and we don't know about nakamura after timeskip
Yeah, i'm pretty sure i'm not fully understanding this manga but strangely i still think it's one of the best things i've ever read. Considering that chapter 56 might be the solution to anyone who got confused reading this last chapter. By the way, the things that Kasuga saw back then in chapter 56, was it the futur?

Hmmm not amazing ending but chapter 56 already did it for me. Also it's nice seeing how demented she was good story overall.
I didn't even expect for this manga to end this year, and yet here we are.
I feel like it was rushed. Is it because the author was also working on his other manga and just decided to end this one quickly?
I wonder if the author will give us his explanation as to the meaning of the ending. As far as I can tell from this ending, it confirmed that Nakamura liked Kazuki in high school.
Really? Fuck me, this is the ending? The first chapter from her prospective? That didn't solve anything...
I don't like this ending.
It feels that the author is trying to make an original ending. However, this ending doesn't answer questions. It creates them. Which leaves a confusing and cliffhanging end.
Terrible ending.
thought this was a great way to stay true to the work and end the manga. Glad he didn't go into the future and show us how everything ends in detail because that's not what this manga's about.
