"Affects" isn't supported by the rules. You'd have to do some roundabout way like
Change the text of target instant or sorcery by replacing all instances of "each creature" with "each non-Human creature" and "all creatures" with "all non-Human creatures."
or
All Humans phase out until the stack is empty. (They phase in.)
or maybe
Target instant or sorcery ignores all Humans.
Though, I'm no longer sure how "ignore" is supported anymore and I'm just spewing shit now.
edit
Target instant or sorcery gains "Ignore the effects of this spell for each Human."
Change the text of target instant or sorcery by replacing all instances of "each creature" with "each non-Human creature" and "all creatures" with "all non-Human creatures."
I think I'll go with the first one
That option still doesn't modify things like [[Scrambleverse]], [[Thoughtweft Gambit]], and the "Punishment" half of [[Crime // Punishment]].
Modifying global spells properly isn't really possible. The wording Elektrophorus mentions works for many, but not all, situations. Just be aware that there are exceptions.
My favorite wording is still the second one :(
Though, I think I got ignore to work within the rules.
Target instant or sorcery gains "Ignore the effects of this spell for each Human."
That would still need additional support in the comprehensive rules to make it work. Personally, I'm a fan of phasing, and since SufficientWolves already has banding in the set, why not add in the other one of the three most complex keywords (banding, protection, and phasing are the three keywords with the most sub-sections associated with them in the comprehensive rules).
Are you seriously trying to bring back banding? Also I think I'm with Aaron Forscythe with the fact that mixing hybrid with C just looks ugly and is super confusing. Also fear has been dropped as a mechanic.
I'm going to be blunt and say you might want to gain more design experience before making a magic set.
I made this set a few years ago, when a bunch of my friends and I decided to essentially make the wedge version of Alara. We all made one or two new mechanics, and brought back an old one or two. I know banding is kinda unbalanced, I just wanted to play around with it a bit.
Wasn't aware that hybrid + colored mana was problematic. As for Fear, I picked that over Intimidate mostly because Intimidate on a 3 color creature is kinda underwhelming, and the creature granting it was one of the two black-primary leaders.
Banding isn't unbalanced, it's just so confusing very few people understand it and there are far better mechanics to use instead like soulbond.
Soulbond doesn't have the same flavour behind it though. Soulbond implies two creatures cooperating, whereas Banding has a more military unit feel to it, which is what I wanted.
That's great, but banding isn't just a dead mechanic, it is a mechanic that has been dug back up, cremated and had its ashes shot into the sun. There are many other existing (Battlecry, battalion, exalted) mechanics that have the flavor you want without being well...banding.
This looks pretty cool, although I do question the decision to use banding as it's an overcomplicated mechanic and one that strengthens defense more than offense. A couple little things I noticed:
Kalthra's first ability needs to specify that Kalthra is the source of the damage.
It weirds me out that Conduit of Kalthra costs more than Kalthra. I'd make the Conduit weaker, I think; maybe take away the part of his ability that prevents all damage dealt to him and make him a 0/5. He's still plenty powerful, as he can accumulate charge counters quickly enough to be a great damage source and he also exiles creatures he kills. With this strength, I'd probably cost him at 2WBR.
I like the cleanse ability, but I'm not sure all the reminder text is needed. When a creature is dealt damage by a source with cleanse it can't be regenerated, and when a creature dealt damage by a source with cleanse dies it's exiled...well, only a creature that dies can be regenerated anyway, and exiled creatures can't be regenerated. So unless I'm missing something, all you need to say is "Cleanse (Whenever a creature dealt damage by a source with cleanse dies, exile it.)" Unless I'm missing something.
Instead of banding and to fit with the leader abilities you have, why not change their abilities to "Each Human creature that attacks or blocks with ~ gains ~'s ability until end of turn?" So Captain of Slaughter's text would read "First Strike; each Human creature that attacks or blocks with Captain of Slaughter gains first strike until end of turn." This may be a little stronger than what you have now, so it may require some recosting.
Wrath of the sun would be simpler if you just gave it a cost of XYWBR and had it read "Deal X damage to each of Y+1 target creatures or players."
Last one: Kalthra's first ability, now that I look back at it, seems slightly overpowered to me. Maybe sacrificing a nonhuman creature should reduce damage dealt by an amount equal to its toughness, instead of just reducing damage by one per creature sacrificed? Or for a more flavorful take, deal damage to ALL players equal to the number of nonhuman creatures they control, and all players have the choice of sacrificing creatures. Since this is a pretty strong human set and white and red have loads of humans in general, Kalthra's controller would likely still have an advantage. Plus, it doesn't seem like Kalthra would be the type to forgive its own summoner for having impure creatures in their army.
Also, I have to disagree with u/justhereforhides. How do you gain design experience without designing and getting feedback? It's not like you're designing creatures at 25/25 called "GOD OF DESTRUCTION AND PAIN" with intimidate, trample, haste, indestructible, flying, double strike, deathtouch, and infect. Keep it up!
Makes sense
Reason for the cost is that I was mimicking a number of the Alara cycles, including the big scary creature for 4(2 of main color)(1 each of secondary color)
Wasn't sure how the replacements of Cleanse and Regenerate interacted. Looking over wording of Regenerate makes me inclined to agree with you.
That would probably work, though there's rather a lot that would have to change to cut banding from the set. I get that it's a rather problematic mechanic, I just felt like bringing it back and playing around with it.
I was going off of the wording of Comet Storm, since Wrath of the Sun is basically that plus Cleanse, at sorcery speed.
Anyway, thanks for the input.
