Help a pipe smoker pick a box of cigars!

I am an avid pipe smoker, but I dont have much experience with cigars. I want to make the jump and the impending birth of my daughter gives me the perfect excuse to justify buying a box to my wife.(to "hand out")

I have been reading reviews and articles on cigars, but I know it boils down to personal tastes. I am hoping someone out there has the same as me. That being English pipe tobaccos, my favorite blends being Sutliff's Berkshire and McClelland's Frog Morton. I am thinking about spending around 200 USD on a box.

I am not in the States, so I was thinking about picking up a box of Cubans, but thats only because of all the stuff I hear about them on TV.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

The only flaw in your plan is every time you want to buy a box, you're gonna have to have another child.

... I think I might have shot myself in the foot with this plan.

And the checkbook. 18 years of feedin' and clothin' for a box of cigars is pretty steep.

I would recommend Partagas Serie D No 4, Hoyo de Monterrey Epicure No 2, Motecristo No 2, or even Partagas Shorts. All great cigars, very different from pipe tobacco, and reasonably priced. Should be easy to find as well

The Partagas looks like it might be exactly what I want!

The reviews are making my mouth water.

Drew estate Natural line. They are pipe tobacco cigars

I didnt know they made pipe tobacco cigars! That is something I will have to try.

Oh, one warning: all the Drew Estate Naturals have a sweetened cap, which some people like, but it turns a lot of people off. The Dark Angel is the one exception; the only Natural that doesn't have a sweetened cap.

That gets said a lot, but I don't think they're actually pipe tobacco; I've read of them described as being most like pipe tobacco, but I don't think they're actually pipe tobacco.

However, if you ARE interested in the Naturals, AND you like English pipe tobacco, there IS a Naturals cigar called "English", and one might think that they'd be most similar to the English pipe tobacco.

OR it just has a coincidental name...

I'm pretty sure they are blended with pipe tobacco.

DE does sell pipe tobacco as well.

Yeah, I've been doing a little research since I posted that, and I DID find one source saying that two different pipe tobaccos are blended into the cigar tobacco.

Apologies to Bolbi.

Instead of a box of one type of cigar I would suggest a sampler. Just sone different cigars to figure out what you like. I personally enjoy ones such as Montecristo, NUB, Oliva serie O and V, Drew Estate Undercrown. You could go to a b&m and ask for ones they suggest for a beginner and grab you a nice selection. It would suck to spend that much on a box and end up not liking them.

That is a great idea! I will definitely be picking up a sampler in the future. For this box I will be giving some away, and I fear I would end up with a "the one that got away" type situation. Montecristo is a name I have come across a few times now.

I really wish there was a store around here I could walk into and pick up a few cigars to try, but the only things resembling cigars I have found here are a few old backwoods.

Ok understandable. I am looking at a cigars international catalog right now and they have 20 Gran Habano Vintage 2002 for 49.99. I have had these before and I really liked them. And that is a pretty good price. Im not sure exactly what you like or want but that is just an idea. You could online and see if they have anything that interests you.

Woah, that is a helluva deal! They sound like really good cigars too!

How long could I get away with storing these without a humidor if I didnt open the box?

I would say no more than maybe a coupke of days but that is me ebing paranoid. You can buy an airtight Tupperware container and clean it really good and get a vouoke of boveda packs and you have a makeshift humidor for really cheap.

+1. This is a pretty good cigar for the price. I think I sell these in store for about $7-$8.

Honestly, I would go for something on the low price spectrum like a mazo of seconds. No need to waste good sticks on folks that may not appreciate them.
