[Troubleshooting] CPU Stress Test Safe Temperatures

So my computer shut down playing BL2 a little while ago, wouldn't turn back on, and I ended up reseating the CPU fan cable on the mobo. Decided to run prime95 for awhile to see if it was shutting down due to high temps, and after running for maybe 15 minutes it was showing a temp of around 70C for the CPU and 88-90 for Core0. I have an i3-4340 with stock fan and 90C seems unreasonably high. Is this something I should be worried about or is the CPU temp the one that I should be concerned with?

90C isn't unheard of high, but it's mostly due to you only having a stock cooler. As long as it doesn't reach the max (100-105 I believe) you shouldn't have a problem.

So when I see people talking about having a stable OC when temps are less than 70 or 80C, they're taking about CPU temps and not the individual core temps?

Yeah. They also likely have an aftermarket cooler.

Gotcha. So I shouldn't reasonably expect it to ever get hotter than that? Or could it get past safe limits when the GPU is stressed heavily at the same time?

Yeah that should be the highest you'll see out of the cpu.

That's high, but not imminent damage high.

Depends on your cooler what temps you should expect.

Most CPUs are safe up to about 90 degrees Celsius anyway though. years back I ran a 1.6Ghz E2140 at like 3Ghz or some shit for a while, it was hitting +100 degrees under load and it still worked when i sold it.

Just wondering, did you apply thermal paste when you installed your cooler?

No it came pre-applied, I was led to believe that was sufficient.
