How long have we been "Sparty"?

I keep hearing us called "Sparty" by the talking heads on TV. How long has this been going on?

I know I graduated over 20 years ago, but we didn't call ourselves Sparty when I was on campus. Has this changed? Or is this just non-Spartans doing it as a shorthand?

When I was on campus we were the Spartans or State.

I don't know why, but this is irritating me. Do I just need to loosen up?

Thanks.

We are not Sparty. We are the Spartans, and Sparty is the most badass mascot in college sports, not a collective noun. Only outsiders call us Sparty in my experience, and it annoys the hell out of me too.

It just seems condescending.

Thanks.

I was afraid I was the only one this bothered. Nice to know I'm not alone.

Yeah it's something only non-MSU and really non-B1G people say. I guess Michigan State and The Spartans are both a little too wordy and people outside MI can't really call us "State".

I agree. It is not as if our team name has been officially changed, it's just a nickname. I am okay with it.

I first noticed someone on ESPN (can't remember who) do it a few years ago and it's seemed to stick with a lot of them. It's definitely annoying.

I don't actually mind it, but I think you're right that it only started probably 4-5 years ago

It's not that it's objectively a bad nickname, I just don't really like getting a nickname from some random talking head with no affiliation with the school who probably spends most of the time hating on the big ten.

Actually the talking heads are referring to the store Spartys when they say Spartys.
