Backseat Boy
It's so ironic
How at seventeen
My best friend is named Jack
and I find him in glass bottles
That shatter and crack just as easily as me.
I spend my nights in backseats
With a boy who exhales my name
Like smoke from a cigarette
And laces his fingers through my hair
Like I am his last hope.
I break hearts for fun
And I'll chase people away
Just like I'm chasing your name out of my throat
With the vodka that you bought me
Three weeks ago.
This backseat boy keeps me up at night
With seven hour phone calls
About how he needs me to stay
And I wonder where he was
Three months ago
When I was crying on the bathroom floor
Because he picked one week out of November
To completely forget my name.
I've had people come in to my life
That left without a warning
And I've never really figured out
If it's because this hole inside of me scares them away
Or if I'm really just as terrible
As the voices in my head are telling me.
The backseat boy tells me I have stories in my eyes
And a whole universe inside my soul
That he wants to live in forever.
I can take backseat boy's hand
Or swallow seventeen pills
And I don't know which one's better.
