"Mừng Xuân Ất Mùi - Mừng Dâng Quang Vinh" - What Does it Mean?
Just arrived in Vietnam and I see this everywhere, I know it has something to do with Tet, but I cannot get a proper translation.. Google Translate tells me this means "Mung Xuan Yi Smell - Down Glorious Gospel", while Bing translate says it means "Welcome To My House Smells - Welcome Surges Glory"... I cannot believe that either translation is correct and searching for other translations turns up nothing... it is a mystery.

"Mừng xuân Ất Mùi" roughly translates to Happy New Year Ất Mùi. Here "mừng" means "happy/celebrating", "xuân" is the Spring (season) which always coincides with the start of a new Lunar Year so in this phrase it also indicates new year. As for Ất Mùi, it is the name of the Lunar New Year starting Feb 19, 2015 until some time in the beginning of 2016. So the phrase literally means "Celebrating Ất Mùi Spring".
"Mừng Đảng Quang Vinh" (you got a typo with Đảng) is a phrase used by the Communist Party, which basically translates to "Celebrating the Glorious (Communist) Party". "Communist" is not written in the phrase but it is implied and everybody knows which Đảng is being inferred because it is the only political party in Viet Nam. So why is this attached to the celebration of the Lunar New Year? Because the Communist Party celebrates its establishment day on Feb 3, which usually coincides with the Lunar New Year time.
