Mignolet Discussion

I think he's put in an outstanding performance, okay a few bad distributions but that's going to happen - other than that he's

  • Been very vocal with the back
  • Shot stopping has been superb
  • Confidence in dominating his area and understand when to go for the ball, some of those rushes were squeaky bum time but he didn't doubt himself and his confidence is showing in his form.

Just before half time he played a fucking blinder, if we went into the dressing room at 1-1, with the way The Saints were playing, the 2nd half would have been very, very different.

So do you guys think in the summer we're going to sign a 2nd Goalkeeper, someone who isn't necessarily going to push for the 1st spot (Maybe not on Mingolet's level, but obviously we have to upgrade from Jones now - that's going to happen in the summer without doubt.)

Or do you think actually, we'll still try and go for an upcoming or bigger name keeper, bit like the Valdés route in Jan (So glad we didn't actually get him!) but yeah, someone who has the capability to contest with Mingolet?

I ask this because top teams have generally had a solid number one keeper who isn't being contested, but we were going for that route in Jan, do you think we still will?

i think we certainly need another goal keeper, migs has played outstanding since he came back but if he losses his form, misses a match for whatever reason or gets injured we will need another good keeper.

Hopefully we can get Mat Ryan from Club Brugge, he's got good distribution and makes some solid saves from the little I've seen of him. Also fairly young and has won the best goalkeeper in Belgium twice in a row.

He is only 184cm though

He is only 184cm though - yet he has won best goalkeeper it obviously doesn't affect his game

Victor Valdes isn't tall either and he's a quality keeper, And this is because they both have excellent distribution.

Barthez was 178, still made it to the world cup with France.

Schalke's Ralf Fährmann is damn solid, and he's 196. Might be possible to pry off them without a huge outlay, given that Schalke seems to have an infinite supply of good goalkeepers.

How short is De Gea?

We should have got Vorm in my opinion. Spurs have Friedel as a backup already and Lloris is untouchable.

100% agree with you, Vorm is a fantastic keeper.

Didn'tRodgers want Vorm but the committee didn't approve it?

1
Sefilis•

He's pretty old alright, not sure how much he'd want in wages but maybe the age was a factor? I remember we wanted Begovic or Mignolet too

2

They could lose Lloris without CL. Friedel is also about 1000. I'd take vorm though

I'm happy with staying with Migs, I always liked him. That debut penalty 2 point save.

I was at anfield that day for the first time, I think I almost pooped my pants, what a debut :)

People also forget how young he is for a keeper

1
gregwoodbury•

We need a new keeper, but only a backup so its no longer necessary to get a proven /world class one

17
lucasfuturecptn•

I think we need somebody proven but we're not looking for a first choice keeper I think you're saying.

9
gregwoodbury•

Yeah pretty much

2
thugmonkey•

He has been awesome. He still lacks some skill but he is now commanding and clear headed, I think we have a winner and will only get better with age.

Also he has made numerous match winning saves.

We do still need a better back goalie though.

Jackb1228•

A lot of good punches as well.

2
Birdseedmaster•

man, he is just keeping it simple and being aggressive. it is making a huge difference.

No, we're good with Migsy.

4
fluffyguffy•

Give it Migsy till the end of the season And then a better back-up in summer

pragmatic_soul•

Right now, I dread a situation where Mignolet gets injured or suspended. What would we do? He's been massive for us lately and our only backup for him is Ward.

I honestly still want another 1st choice keeper, I know everybody on this sub is now super-pro migs but he's still too flawed and we can never risk having him drop back down like he did again, he was so dire and a lot of people have short memories on this sub.

He's certainly improved, credit to him, but i'm not convinced that him having some good games makes up for how bad he was, he's always been an excellent shot stopper but I think the turn around in fortunes is down to a few factors, the whole team improving, Can at the back, Lucas in DM and the change in formation, all have allowed us to use our greatest strength, attacking pressure, to keep the other team on the back foot and take pressure off Mignolet.

I am not his biggest fan, ill admit that, but where people blamed the defence in his first season for the goals he was clearly at fault in conceding people are now crediting him for an improvement that I feel lies with a few different factors. I keep hearing people bring up 'but 5 clean sheets', how much is that to do with him directly? I feel a lot of this is down to our attack keeping the play at the other end

He's still not a leader at the back - so he shouts at players, he's always done that, since day one its nothing new, his distribution is still bad - there are times when he will only give short balls because he know he cant get it to his man long range, his organising the defence is still bad - i mean we conceede so many set pieces its ridiculous, he is an improved player but not the right long term choice for us

rnessy•

I agree, it's undeniable that he is in good form, but a lot of that I'd attribute to the formation. His distribution still isn't as good as Rodgers needs it. With three in the back he isnt needed on the ball much but if we ever want to go back to four in the back, we need a keeper who can distribute well. He also punches the ball A LOT. A good punch is frequently the right move, but he needs to catch the ball more. A punch, especially a poor one, leaves us way too vulnerable for a favorable fall to an opposition player. Mignolet is an excellent shot stopper, but I still need more convincing to say he is more than that.

2
chowlfc•

I think he put in another great shift tonight especially in the conditions - I feel he is turning the corner!

3
tommy_taco•

I think everyone agrees we need to sign a keeper regardless, but now with migs playing well we are in a better negotiating position with other clubs. It will depend on what the market is like but if there is someone great available I think we should still go for it, I think competition for the #1 spot is healthy, but if there isn't someone I'm ok with going into next season with migs as the starter as well, it's good to see how well he has responded to the dip in form, only issue is that his distribution is bad by the standards we want to be playing

2
StevieMe•

He is playing purely on instinct now and it's working. No doubt, no fear, no insecurity.

2
SeveredSurvival•

Like staying with Mignolet but we need a better back-up. Jones doesn't cut it. He looks nervous every time he's in the net.

2
CaptainFantastic8•

SIMON CLEANSHEET MIGNOLET

2
anachronox08•

I really like Mignolet. But the fact remains that his kicking is really poor. Shot stopping is primary requirement of a goalkeeper, but it's the distribution quality that makes a good keeper a great keeper. And we need a great keeper.

1
willgeld•

He's made an immense improvement and kept a lot of clean sheets recently due to some very good saves. If he keeps this up maybe we will just replace Jones

1
Fnarley•

I've never liked him and while he is playing well now I still do not think he is good enough for Liverpool.

Having said that he has been excellent this year.
