Motorcycle Accident leading to terrible foot pain
Hello,
I wanted to get some advice that I thought I’d be able to get here so I’ll tell my story and put a TL:DR down bottom.
In August 2013 I was in motorcycle accident, nothing too severe but when I tried to step up from the hospital bed I felt a sharp stabbing pain in both feet. They did a scan, I think it was an X-ray and determined that I had bruised my heel bones, probably from the way I landed in the accident, and told me to stay off it, REST, etc. After a few weeks I noticed an improvement in the sharp pain and didn’t limp anymore but started feeling a different pain, it was after standing or walking for an extended period of time, my feet felt hot, achy, not just isolated to the heel, making it incredibly difficult to stand after 10-15 minutes with my feet tingling while resting afterwards. I went to the first podiatrist who thought I had Achilles tendonitis and taught me stretches and preformed ultrasound therapy with no results. I got insoles and heel cups that I’ve been wearing every day since with no result so in February 2014 I went to a second podiatrist that thought It was plantar fasciitis until he did an ultrasound scan and said my plantar fascia looked perfectly fine and said one possibility could be scar tissue left from the accident causing the pain.
He performed shockwave therapy on my right foot with no results either. He wanted to do an MRI but at the time I was without insurance and couldn’t afford it so from April 2014 to January 2015 I dealt with the pain while maintain the stretches, icing, keeping off my feet, and in the new year got insurance and went to a 3rd podiatrist. He thought I had radiculopathy and the pain in my feet was caused by damage to my back and ordered a lumbar MRI the results of which were:
Findings:
Spinal numbering is conventional. There is a mild compression
fracture of the T8 vertebral body seen on the sagittal T2 scout view,
probably chronic. There is a superimposed superior endplate
Schmorl's node.
Lumbar spine alignment is normal. Disc heights are preserved. No
disc desiccation. No marrow signal abnormalities of lumbar spine.
The conus is normal in position and terminates at L1. Visualized
retroperitoneal structures are normal.
Based on sagittal sequences, there is no thecal sac or neural
foraminal narrowing from T10-T11 through L1-L2.
Impression:
1. Normal lumbar spine. No disc height loss, disc herniation,
thecal sac or neural foraminal narrowing.
2. Mild T8 compression fracture, incidentally noted on the scout
view of the cervical and thoracic spine, probably chronic.
My primary physician received the results and told me he didn’t think the compression fracture was causing my foot pain and sent it off to a spine specialist for a 2nd opinion who agreed it would not cause the pain in my feet. The podiatrist disagreed and sent me back to my primary with instructions to refer to a spine specialist as he was unwilling to change his diagnosis.
My primary referred me to an orthopedic surgeon who told me that my pain is the result of a contusion from the accident and that it he expects your pain to improve with time, activity modification, and appropriate shoe wear. I pushed for an MRI of my feet and he reluctantly agreed. The MRI of my foot showed no diagnostic abnormalities but the one of my heel/ankle showed some results:
There is no fracture nor significant osseous edema. Very minimal osseous edema and overlying soft tissue edema is suggested at the dorsal margin of the calcaneus.
The subtalar joint effusion is present. There is a mild posterior calcaneal enthesophyte.
No tendinous abnormality is demonstrated. There is irregular thickening and laxity of the anterior talofibular ligament compatible with prior injury. There is adjacent edema to indicate that this is acute.
IMPRESSION: Subtalar effusion. Minimal contusion to the calcaneus.
Old anterior talofibular ligament tear.
The orthopedic surgeon called my resulted unremarkable and said again that he thinks the pain will improve with time and proper footwear. I’ve been wearing SuperFeet insoles in all of my shoes, I wear slippers at home and haven’t stepped on barefoot on a hard surface in months. I keep off my feet as much as possible and even after visiting this surgeon my pain has only gotten worse. I’m not sure of where to go from here. He seems dismissive of my concerns telling me that this is the only possible diagnosis and I should see improvement in a year but in a year I’ll be out $400 a month for insurance and with no improvement through all of 2014 and after a month with his new advice my pain has only gotten worse. What can I do?
TL:DR: Motorcycle accident in Aug. 2013, foot pain, went to 3 different foot docs with 3 different diagnosis all ending in no pain relief for me. Current doc dismissive of my concerns keeps saying it will heal with time, I think there is something more. Need any and all advice on how to proceed.
Current symptoms: Bi-lateral foot pain after standing/walking/weight bearing
• Feel pain in whole of foot from heel to ball
• Pain can be achy, burning, sore, on a 5-7 scale, like a toothache in my feet
• Feet tingle and still in pain after resting, goes away after 30-45m.
So far:
• Docs poked and prodded my feet to try to find a sharp pain but unable to
• Have had X-rays, MRIs, ultrasound scans with mild results,
• Ultrasound therapy, shockwave therapy, stretches, insoles, staying off my feet, have been no help.
I’m willing to try anything from experimental procedures to voodoo witch doctor treatments.
Please help.
Thank you!
