Some juicy bits from the Paranet Papers

Now, this is from the RPG, so its canonicity is maybe a little dubious, but you could practically subtitle the Paranet Papers 'wizards dun fucked up':

So, as it turns out, annihilating 13 god-tier beings and a few million vampires doesn't just create a political power vacuum - it creates a literal power vacuum. At present, Chichen Itza's ley-line absorbed all the energy from the death of the Red King and the Lords of Outer Night and is basically the magic equivalent of a WMD. Also, the Church has a militant branch that thinks the Inquisition didn't go far enough.

Justin DuMorne was the one who killed Rasputin, who subsequently made a deal with Mab (and who may, in fact, still be alive.) Even when he wasn't a warlock this guy was an asshole. Also, Mab backed the bolsheviks during the Revolution because she wanted to use them to keep a grip on Russia after the collapse of the Black Court. Also Baba Yaga isn't a Faerie. Oh, and werebears are confirmed. They're scary as all hell.

The Green Knight exists (and currently hangs out in the Everglades), but whether he's a Summer guardian, some kind of junior varsity Sidhe Knight, or a Fomor stooge, is currently unknown.

Arthur Langtry is, bar none, the most powerful wizard in the planet. In fact, he might be the most powerful mortal in the world, period.

There is a White Court clan that feeds on anger. Nobody likes them.

See, why didn't they try to recruit Dresden? The man's psyche is a living flamethrower.

They're all too busy flaming people on the internet.

Magic equivalent WMD - Mab and Bolsheviks - part of the inspiration for Harry Dresden - am I the only person seeing the link to Crazy Harry, the Bolshevik Muppet?

18
Anubissama•

OK, now I HAVE to buy it just for the story part of it, screw the new mechanics. Especially The Langtry part I'm just a sucker for White Council stuff.

9
math792dOP•

It just has an extension of Langtry's biography as well as a stat block.

...Well, I say 'stat block', it just says 'Nope, you're not beating this guy in a fight.'

16
Tellurion•

Harry would just shoot him, Han Solo style.

It is repelled by one of the many intricate and invisible high-velocity-projectile shields woven into his robes. He notices the source. You die.

But did Harry shoot first?

Harry would shoot first. Just ask Corpsetaker.

...Well, I say 'stat block', it just says 'Nope, you're not beating this guy in a fight.'

Good. As the old saying goes, "if you stat it, they will kill it."

1
math792dOP•

Yep. There are rules for conflicts with plot device characters, but you ain't killing them.

2
Anubissama•

any chance you could re-type the biography hear or something...?

0
math792dOP•

No, but I can give you a little teaser:

“The Senior Council are the most powerful wizards on the planet, yet including the Merlin in their number is like having Joe DiMaggio on your nephew’s Little League team. He is, in all probability, the most powerful mortal on the planet.”

6
Anubissama•

damn you... I pre-ordered it after reading that bit.

That begs the question. Is the RPG canon? Does Butcher write it, or is it done by someone else?

5
math792dOP•

It's done by the guys at Evil Hat, but Jim gets to look over the RPG books before they're printed. Of course, sometimes they deliberately put in mistakes to troll fans.

According to Jim the researchers at Evil Hat managed to guess a ton of stuff about the future book before Jim got them to remove it. Those guys are thorough.

18
Gygaxfan•

Yep, though I recall a woj a bit back that the game was cannon

2
math792dOP•

It's canon in the sense that it exists in a universe where Harry trusted Will enough to start compiling this info with him.

2
poizan42•

Well WoJ is that Justin DuMorne is D-E-D dead, whatever that means.

3
spookyjeff•

I think they mean rasputin is still alive, despite being killed. You know, Rasputin style.

casualblair•

Rah Rah Rasputin!

Thank you Turisas.

Hraesvelg7•

What does D-E-D dead mean? It's obvious! It's missing the A. As an educated person you will have learned that A is the first letter of the alphabet. Justine DuMorne's name refers to the morning, the first light of day. The first light of day is brought by Lucifer, who was the first among angels. The missing A means it's not dead. It's mostly dead. There's a big difference between mostly dead and all dead. Justin DuMorne is Satan, not dead, and also more Princess Bride references. Perhaps he killed Harry's father and should prepare to die.

5
_just_some_guy•

I have to say, before I got to the Princess Bride line, I was reading this in Billy Crystal's voice.

3
corwin01•

... In this universe.

4
Westnator•

What, you think a now 150 year old man shot 7 times, poisoned, had a leg and an arm broken. Then after he drown in a well is still alive?

Yeah me too, that guys out there somewhere.

4
km89•

Kinda sounds like Harry, when you get right down to it. Wizard, long life, shot several times, poisoned, many broken bones...

3
Westnator•

Well not all at the same time honey.

1
snakespm•

I always took it as he is "mostly" dead.

1
Tellurion•

The Green Knight sounds like The Swamp Thing.

3
angel_caido_7•

I think Rasputin changed of body before he was killed and Harry was trained by one of the most dark and powerful wizards of all time.

1
proddy•

This is missing the most important question: are weregoats real?

1
math792dOP•

Only weregators and werebears are explicitly shown.
