Does anyone know how to configure Firefox so it can play videos?

Obviously the question is a bit tongue in cheek, but I almost don't even bother to try any more, I just right click and "Open Link in Chrome". Chrome can always play videos, Firefox can almost never play videos. I've attempted to solve this many different times with no success.

The most recent example:

http://streamable.com/init

THE VIDEO COULD NOT BE LOADED, EITHER BECAUSE THE SERVER OR NETWORK FAILED OR BECAUSE THE FORMAT IS NOT SUPPORTED.

The error varies quite a bit, this is just one example.

Is there a maybe Firefox plugin that can embed Chrome whenever there is a video?

Please include more information. What OS are you on? If it's Windows is it the "N" version that shipped without the media player? What ways have you tried to solve it?

Do you have better results if you test in a fresh profile (using the profile manager)?

Look at https://www.youtube.com/html5 to get a sense of what your browser supports. If it's Linux you might need to install a gstreamer plugin to get h264 support for instance.

For me (Windwos 8.1, FF37, no extra codecs installed) the video works.
Further information of your System would be good....

I bought a brand new computer and installed Windows 8.1, meaning everything was brand new. I have had no troubles at all playing any kind of video. I've since reinstalled the profiles I was using right before my old computer died, and no problems there either.

There was a time when Firefox had a hard time with some videos. Back then were you tweaking a lot in about:config trying to make things work? Maybe those tweaks are interfering now? Just a guess.

Try a new, clean profile. I wouldn't bother with a reset. Just make sure you export your bookmarks and settings for extensions like Classic Theme Restorer, Tab Mix Plus, etc.

Someone mentioned codecs. I remember in the late 90s and early 2000s having codec problems but every time I install either VLC or Media Player Classic (I forget which), it comes with a bunch of codecs. So maybe that's something to try. I've never thought about it.
