[Serious] Cancer and longevity research are making leaps and bounds, which seems great, but what happens when 7 billion people keep having babies and consuming resources but stop dying?

serious replies only

Obviously this is a touchy subject because I don't want to get cancer or die and I don't want my family to, but we can't just all live forever.

We become forced to be more efficient.

People are having less children in developed parts of the world like Western Europe, North America and Japan, where this is all going on. People are having more children in Northern India where the economic situation wasn't too great anyway before two earthquakes with an epicentre one country over set them back. It's all in balance.

If it was all in balance the population wouldn't still be growing.

It's growing at a steady rate. If you're still worried, fear not. Our impact on the environment will kill off a lot of people over the next 50 years.

OH THANK GOD. I really hate people

They'll start dying for other reasons. Infectious Disease is going to make a comeback once antibiotics stop working.

The population will plateau, people will have fewer babies, and we will level out at about 9 billion people.

Maybe it will be the catalyst to actually get us off the planet and start living in space and on other planets and moons and stuff.

Sure, if we don't destroy ourselves first. We're a few decades from being able to colonize Mars, and leaving the solar system is beyond the technological horizon right now.

Yup. I concur. Still got to get off of this doomed rock first.

Once we reach a point where there is no room, we will have other places to go to. I.E. Mars, the moon, or a variation of distant places. Heck we may even be living in floating cities on Venus by then.

We'll find another earth-like planet hopefully by then.

As nuclear energy continues to advance and become cheaper, we will have near limitless energy, at least enough for the foreseeable future. With cheap energy comes the increased viability of space efficient farming structures and desalinization plants. Right now, iirc the u.s. produces enough food to feed two thirds of current world population. With increased efficiency it could easily become one hundred percent. With in a hundred years energy, clean water, and food will be for for all intents and purposes infinite in supply.

As well, in the united States, 90% of the population lives within 100 miles of the coast, essentially the vast majority of land is almost completely unpopulated. I believe, but can't swear on it, the the same is basically true across the globe. Land isn't really an issue.

Basically every essential resource is only scarce due to political/economic barriers. Increased longevity and decreased fatality rates won't have any noticeable effect for hundreds of years
