Cap Design for r/fgb -mitchyslick2

Please read

hey guys.

so i noticed we're doing a cap design contest and i just noticed a few things. i'm an art director/designer and i've been doing it for 5 years professionally at different firms around Downtown Toronto. my job deals with things exactly like this in regards to critiquing and sourcing material.

first of all, the design was not original and googling "hand drawn triangles" reveals it on the first page of google images.

[here's the original](http://www.freepik.com/free-vector/triangles-background-in-hand-drawn-style_768990.htm#term=hand drawn triangles&page=1&position=0) (yes this is free for commercial use but you have to credit "designed by Freepik.com" and i wouldn't want my cap to have this on it as well as taking away an original design to be snubbed for something that took minimal effort.)

second, we should post some rules for the contest and have an official voting/thread. [i see that u/iAmTorin has mentioned this but the dumbfucks of this subreddit have downvoted him for no reason.](http://www.reddit.com/r/FixedGearBicycle/comments/36lsb4/cap_design_for_rfgb/crf7d58)

  1. designs should be 100% original (no free designs/creative commons)

  2. designs should have a maximum of 3 changes submitted (to give fair time for others instead of just submitting like 100 changes taking up people giving feedback to others)

  3. don't use/imitate other brands (no obey/supreme knockoff shit) edit: i agree with u/KayceS in that we can have fun with something that pokes fun at brands but i more mean a straight rip-off.

  4. personally r/FGB is confusing, it's not our subreddit and going to it would just be another step of confusion (the last spokecard contest brought up this exact point)

But yes, I agree. I too work as a designer and our intern's contract just ended, so I have no one to critique harshly anymore. Submit your shit so I can tear it down and tell you that you suck at design. <3

First off, u/zoidd is absolutely 100% right about the cap needing to be original. There will be profit from this (not any going to me), and I don't want anyone to say they have claim to any of our money.

Like Jehu said I'm not ready yet for designs. I'm still working on making sure that we have someone to produce and sell the caps. I probably should have waited until I had that settled, but I like how excited the sub is.

r/fgb is just a short version of our name. I get putting on our cap to save space. I keep meaning to get r/fgb to direct to us (see r/hhh or r/mfa).

I think what happened is I said I liked the style of this particular FACTORY FIVE and he ran with it. I didn't even think to google the triangles. :/

I think we can do better, I was surprised for a first design. Figured it was too good to be true. I know personally I'd just like something with a little punch in color and style, fun to look at.

I'm not sure where the r/fgb comes from. Because I'm sure we have had that discussion in the past. I agree with pretty much everything you said. I'm definitely not looking for some obey/supreme stuff.

I am with you on 3/4 of it.

Rule 3 could be a sticky one for me. Urban fixed gear culture has often used homage as a design element. Some of the best products from the fixed world are imitations of other brands. I think a rip off would be dumb, but things like the Fyxo bottles are pretty rad. And that is only one example.

i think making like fake logos is kind of funny.

fyxo sent us this sticker sheet and the logos were AWESOME

my point is more that the focal point of the piece shouldn't be about a brand but more about our subreddit/culture.

I agree that designs should be 100% original, I don't want to be riding and have someone say to me "oh hey nice cap, I saw that(/something similar) on website x".

And r/FGB IS confusing. what is that, like an ad.fly for reddit or someshit. Making me click again to reach my actual destination..

u/Zoidd when we get it manufactured, I'd really like something non-cotton. I have a lot of cotton ones and would like something modern and breathable.

my beard game seems to be coming along. The cap is some type of polyester blend. Blue Lug doesn't mention anything on the cap on on the website.
