Why Christians cannot support men praying with covered heads, or women praying with uncovered heads.

Recent discussions have reminded us of the importance of not letting personal preference or emotion come between us and obeying the Will of the Lord, as revealed to us in sacred scripture. Just because a practice is inconvenient, or inconsistent with modern values, does not mean that we can abandon it. With that in mind, I ask you to read this: http://www.biblicalresearchreports.com/headcovering-today.php

Now, some of you might think that this issue isn't important, but I feel that all of God's word is important, and it is well past time to address this issue.

The roof covers everyone's head. Checkmate, literalists.

I think we might have to go back to the original Greek for this one.

Surely you wouldn't pronounce judgment on an entire half of humanity without having conducted a linguistic analysis to support your position.

Half? Men have rules for hats too. I wear hats all the time, and I pray a lot. It may be easy for the only-pray-in-church crowd to make sure they don't accidentally pray with their hat on, but I constantly have to double check. I'd prefer to just be able to not worry about it. But I can't allow my own desires to come before obedience to God.

As a practicing Christian I would like to say that I agree with the gist of what is being communicated. My understanding on this matter is more fully explained here.

I feel that I must respectfully disagree with some of this authors interpretations. I think it's a bit of a stretch to say that a woman should wear a head covering if she is required to lead a Bible study in the absence of a qualified man.

Firstly, there is simply no such exception in the verses as stated. It's quite a stretch to construct one, such as the example of a Bible study led by a woman.

Secondly, this situation should not occur. There is no exception in Timothy 2:12 for the absence of a qualified male. In fact, the reasons given for the prohibition on women teaching in 2:14, it seems that leading a Bible study would be the last place you'd see such an exception, if one did exist. It seems like the situation where a woman would wear a head covering...teaching or having authority over a man, is expressly prohibited in the first place, and therefore moot.

I'm all about the headscarves. Working up to doing it 24/7 hopefully!

Does your priest pray with his head covered?

2
LuluThePandaEastern Orthodox•

Kind of! Some priests have hats but they only wear them at certain times. Monks pray with a headcovering though-I remember reading something about it and how it fit into the gender thing (monks being essentially married to Christ I guess?), but I cant find the article anymore and it drives me nuts.

Should we also discuss reinstituting slavery? How dare modern law keep us from archaic customs!

1†
CampusTourOP•

There is nothing in the New Testament forbidding us from prohibiting the practice of slavery. There is, however, a prohibition against the use or lack of head coverings during certain activities by people of certain genders.

So does that mean I should both cover and uncover my head at the same time? Is it like Schrodinger's cat?

I think it's rather dangerous to make assumptions about the bible.

-1†
CampusTourOP•

How is it an assumption? I am familiar with the text, as are you. If I am incorrect, please point out the New Testament verse where we are forbidden to prohibit the practice of slavery.

You're trying to turn a letter by one man to one church at one point in time into a direct command by God to everyone.

That doesn't fly,

1
CampusTourOP•

Those letters by one man make up the basis for a great deal of Christian theology. Are you sure you want to disregard them?

Couldn't making a post like this be considered in opposition to verse 16?

This is a surprising thread coming from you. Weren't you the one with a troll report?

So when it's about gays, it's legit.

When it's about hats, it's not?

Its an issue of the heart.

I am glad to see that you are meditating on the word of God... It will profit you much to do so.
