Help Me Help You - Part 1: Awards

Topps

What up everyone? I'm going to make one of these every so often, where I basically ask for some feedback. This one is the definitive problem we have: Awards giveouts.

So if you've been in SWCT since day 1, you might have seen an Award pop-up from time to time that you didn't open. You also didn't know that you received that award, the corresponding credits, or any card that came with it.

Most of the time, you'll see that you have an award to open and then go open it. The container opens, you see the cool animation, etc. It happens like this the first time you open the app, so it's kind of the expected flow.

Also since day 1, I've had to give 99% of awards out manually when I have the time during the rest of the day, all in order for you to see the animation and the credit reward amount. This is why some awards have been late, because the time is just not there.

So there are two ways we can go about this going forward (until I can convince the developers that this is an important enough issue not just for my sanity and time, but for user experience and basically trust):

A) Insert set awards are still manual. You'll get them as soon as we can get them out, which is usually a few hours but sometimes can be a day or two. You'll see the box open, see your credits get added, and will be stoked on it. You WON'T however, see a full checklist ahead of time.

B) Awards are handled on a pre-set schedule, like they're supposed to be, but the function is still broken so you won't see the award case open, you won't see the credits get added to your account and you won't get a notification along with it. There will be a checklist for necessary cards ahead of time, you'll get the award on time, you'll get your credits (screenshot before/after is how I check), but you won't be aware of any of it at first.

So leave your thoughts on this below, ask your friends, and let's make this better for everyone. Consider it our own little Rebel cell, if you will.

That's about it for now. Hope everyone's having a great week and I'm excited for you to see what else is coming today/this weekend.

Cheers, Steve/@ToppsSteve/SenatorSteve

Hi Steve, thanks for asking. Seems like

B)

is this obvious choice but a couple follow-up questions.

  1. When you say "you'll get the award on time" does this mean at, or shortly after, the deadline? If not, your suggestion to screenshot before and after to confirm credits would be difficult if users didn't have a rough idea of what time the award was dropping.

  2. If the award includes an award card, will the card just pop into the Awards section?

And while you're here, quick plug to move the Awards section up. ;)

Congrats on the great new sets, especially Badges!

I read this and thought, "what's an awards section?"

And then I remembered I don't have an iPhone :'(

6
MALAGANT_on_SWCTMALAGANT•

Oh, sorry. I didn't realize this was different on Android.

3
AlamothAlamoth13•

Yeah there are no sections on Android. Just all your cards. Awards are technically the last cards if you order by Parallel, but no sections.

6
ShaceHolduDARTHHOLDU•

On Android, parallels are grouped together if you sort by parallel but there is no rhyme or reason to the order, and there is nothing labeling each section, no line dividers or anything like that.

jetsaredim•

Yes, the other thing that's missing is the ability to do filtering on "any" text being searched instead of an exact match. Example: try to find all gray McQuarrie paintings on an iOS device is as simple as putting in "paintings gray" but try that on android and you get nothing because there are no cards listed as paintings gray - only "paintings - <painting name> - gray". So, if I want to find all of the parallel of a given insert set, I have to just bring up a listing of the whole set and then find which color parallel I'm collecting within that list...

You do that manually? That's nuts. That should be fully automated. Tell the devs it's really that important. What a waste of time for you!

I would prefer B myself. If it happens when it's supposed to happen, we'll be looking for it, and we'll notice it, even without a notification.

I'd volunteer my development time just to give sanity back to a fellow human being. That's crazy.

Exordium8EXORDIUM•

Does the second option mean we'd have the checklist before the set was finished, or after it was finished but before the award went out? Because I would kill to know how many cards are in, say, the trooper helmet set right now.

6
blurrylegblurryleg•

Exactly.

5
Shane86CANDEROUS_ORDO•

Do it automatically, and then send out a bulletin saying the awards have been given out?

6
KyleBownBruinJedi•

This. B with a bulletin announcement.

tinyasterismsESMARIE•

If this is an option, then absolutely 100% this.

I prefer having the checklist over the flashy animation. Ideally it'd be a mixture of the two, but for me personally, the checklist is key for me. I like to be sure I have the right cards at an easy glance. The animation and stuff is important too, but that's more of a "I don't believe it until I see it" kinda thing.

ETA: I do like the idea of awards, an area to show off my "achivements" on my profile is a great idea and motivating factor to collect, at least for me. Even if I ever decide to trade those cards away, I'll have a badge on my profile and someone else won't. It was what got me hooked on the base set trying to trade whites for whites and then trading up and down trying to nab awards.

openwindowtimeOPENWINDOWTIME•

I agree. The pre-deadline award checklist would be so great that it would be worth almost any downside that came with it.

3
blurrylegblurryleg•

Even if it was just like I see on Bunt, just a guideline length or run size would help immensely.

    1. Pitcher McThrowsfast
    1. ?
    1. ?
3
openwindowtimeOPENWINDOWTIME•

Jeez, do you have McThrowsfast sig? I've been looking for that card for SO LONG...

5
blurrylegblurryleg•

I wish, then maybe I'd be doing better in some of those 10k Challenges!

Here's what I would like to see with awards:

  1. Predetermined and awarded on a set schedule, even if we don't get to "open" the award. I actually like this better because then the card doesn't creep up in count as people open it. It's super nice to see the final count instantly to determine value.

  2. Announce when/how/if there will be an award in the FIRST release article. And then continue to include that information for every card release. Also, keep a running checklist of each card in the set within each article. This seems like common sense now, but yet it's not included.

These are my two main concerns. Not knowing when an award will come, and not knowing if there even IS an award, or what the current checklist is without some research around the app. Should just be presented within the article. If you need help with this, I have a whiteboard and marker you can borrow :)

SSABOLSSSABOLS•

Contrary to popular opinion, I vote for A even though it seems like a PITA. My son loves the sounds and splash when he pulls an insert and almost goes apeshit when we collect an award.

If they popped up without the fanfare, I still think he'd be into it but the excitement might wear off because it just becomes another card and not something special.

wmnoeGRENDELSEN•

I like Option A myself. I'm not in a hurry for the awards to hit the account

4
datixDatix•

Option B for me. I know how many credits I tend to have, and I don't care about the animation. Heck, sometimes I feel a bit fussed to "have" to go open the award anyway. Posters came great last week because there was no credits attached. I loved just getting a notification and seeing it there.

Given the amount of time it takes you, and the fact that it leads to confusion in the schedule, I say B is the best option presented so far. There are bigger/better things for your small team to spend your time on instead of manually assigning awards to feed our dopamine rush. :)

Likewise.

Option B. I believe that is the way Kick currently gives awards (and Bunt is starting to do it that way). For me, the schedule is really important, and I guess its my OCD at work, but if I'm supposed to get an award Thursday at 3pm and I don't get it, it bothers me. I know I will get it eventually, but I still like things to be on time. Kick has generally been spot on, and you do notice the credits added when you first open the app.

By the way, every set should have a credit award, and a bonus card. The credit award should be worthwhile - it's kind of ridiculous to get a 5000 credit award for a set that cost me hundreds of thousands of credits to complete. Think of 50000-75000, again, like Kick does. Thanks for listening Steve.

simonmagnus•

B, with credits. The animation is fun but doesn't add a ton to the "game" like others said a schedule really is nice. Also get an intern or something dude.

3
daser2DASER2•

Give me B all day every day.

I don't know if you've noticed, but time is of the essence in this app. The newest card is the hottest card. Especially when an award card is also part of a chase, I need to bank on getting an award card when promised if I'm going to be able to know that I can continue the chase or else trade it at peak value. Delays of undetermined time introduce uncertainty. With the Gold Olly Moss poster, I didn't know if I was going to receive it or not due to all the uncertainty surrounding it (radio silence on the issue from you and customer support despite repeated inquiries did not help), so I gave up on the Gold Poster parallel chase. With the Gold Paintings, not getting those in a timely manner prevented me from leveraging the 9 extra Orange Paintings from one release in trades for the next release.

There is no doubt that the tech should be built to support the awards function automatically and with ease of administration. That said, please don't overpromise and underdeliver. I love the Painting hoard chases, but if the tech on your side doesn't support it, then maybe it should not have been attempted.

Option A, all the way. Patience, we must learn to have.

I think we're all tired of the cryptic "Award card" vs. "Award" in Transmissions, yourself included with all the confusion resulting in Twitter backlash. All sets should have both. Award cards "appearing" in your card sheet is blah. I only want them there after I've opened the Award so I know to look for it.

...I just don't understand why this also results in having no checklist?

2
jacobseagallJACOBSEAGALL•

Option B doesn't seem to apply to the poster or teal awards 100%. No award case, but there was a notification.

I like option B -I don't need to see credits open, I'd rather have them on schedule -I don't need to open a pack to get an award card, I can scroll -I like having a checklist to be certain i have the cards i need. (Still feel bad about a few that were just short on purple chase because of the confusion of what was in and wasn't in that hunt)

Ultimately having a schedule helps in planning for F2P players, they can count on that credit bonus at the end of a chase instead of waiting an additional couple days wondering when they'll get it.

2
BOSSK_lunch•

I prefer option A until the devs can work their magic. That said, an update in the Transmission like Bunt handles it would be keen.

Pre-deadline award checklist would be great. Much more important than an animation IMO.

Awards related, but my blue dagobah award doesn't show in my deck...it only appears when I search for it.

Sent you a trade that should fix this issue.

Option B. The animation is cool but once you've seen it once, it wears off. Plus it sounds like Option B will be easier on you and your team, so you can make more awesome cards for us!
