To those who are playing with planets and have traveled deep into them...

DISCUSSION

... how does the gravity change as you go further in? Does it continue to increase until you hit the center? Or does it decrease until it balances in the center? In real planets, it does the latter - and that quality may be critical in building trans-planetary transportation...

After a certant depth its impossible to see and its almost like looking through the world. However i didnt notice any real change in gravity when i have the time i will load it up tomorrow and give it another try as the last time i tried was over a week or so ago an there is new source code out so maybe this has changed.

I did a small test on a 120km planet described here.

They appear to be attempting to mimic the function g=mr/R^3. The force of gravity drops linearly with your distance to the center.

ex: at surface you have 1g. Halfway towards center you have 0.5g. At center zero. It's just bugged in the source build and doesn't exactly behave that way yet.

Well, the natural gravity mod has it cancel out in the centre and I'd imagine real planets would as well.

I hate to say it, but using the planet's gravity simply won't work with a max speed of 115 m/s. You could use it to cut the fuel needed in half though, if you wanted.

The main problem I see is that when you go max speed, your velocity forward is moved towards the gravity well, making you slow down (think air drag). If they had a way of separating the two velocities, you could theoretically be orbiting a planet at 100m/s forward and 100m/s down.

Who doesn't play with the unlimited speed mod at this point?

Edit: this is a question, not a statement..

A lot of people, especially those who want to be able to use pistons and rotors.

You aren't making sense.

People aren't using the mod because of the obvious issues with things breaking when you go too fast. Your solution to that is to just fly slow which defeats the purpose of using the mod.

I only have a 300m/s mod on my server.

Is this planets thing a mod until actual planets are released? Is it a good mod?

Guennor•

I'm actually wondering about that as well. People are posting like, screenshots and gifs of planets. But planets, AFAIK, were not released yet...

Natural Gravity is a mod which adds gravity to player made asteroids, however the asteroids from natural gravity are not what you see on the sub. Planets are in the source code and can be enabled if you're skilled enough, however they are quite buggy. Those screenshots and gifs are real. Amazing right?

Guennor•

Yeah man. Pretty cool :) My machine is not that good, I hope i'm able to play the game with planets enabled, when they release planets, that is.

Yeah, I heard they're optimized pretty well but I still don't know how my rig will handle it.

1
domino271•

Yeah, some people have some screenshots of really well-made planets, but I heard someone say planets will be released by the end of this year. ...?

1
Guennor•

Nah. Maybe a month or two.

Just relaying what I heard

It's the source code from github.

It's basically code that isn't stable enough to put up on Steam for the masses to download.

It is possible to enable planets on the current dev build. You can find a guide on how to do it on this very subreddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/spaceengineers/comments/3fiiqz/complete_foolproof_tutorial_for_planets/

domino271•

Oh, so it's just a less refined version of what will be released?

2
Liegeman•

Yes. It is an early version of planets. They've come a long way and are quite lovely, but they are laggy as heck. That's probably why they aren't out yet.

Oh, that makes sense. How much of an FPS drop is it?
