Artie Chair - Shuli over Sal?

I mean wtf is wrong with Howard? Just because you dont jive with Sal and dont like him doesnt mean the audience cant appreciate him. You gave Shuli a shot over him? Really? thinking back to those Shuli weeks I cringe just remembering how embarrassing silent it was from him. It seems when sal comes in lately hes really gunning to impress Howard, I think he should be given a shot if not for the Hilarity of how he would react.

Both Sal and Shuli perform well in their current roles on the show. But I wouldn't want either as a permanent fixture in the Artie Chair.

Shuli is absolutely terrible. He just isn't funny. Sal can be annoying but at least he's funny. There are so many times where Shuli makes a crack and is followed by a second of dead air because no one laughs.

julianvs•

shuli stories are so cringey and he always tries to work bits from his act into conversation like he just thought of it

katzrc•

Agreed.

sal sat in for fred when his brother in law died and did a great job. it was nice having someone in the studio for howard to make fun of since robin and fred are basically off limits these days. i would love to see sal in the studio full time.

I thought he was great there although obviously nervous.

shuli is awful, sal would be ok. honestly i think unless it's someone who is isn't trying to impress howard, it's gonna suck.

I agree 100%. Artie had it pegged years ago that Shuli is a no talent hack when he referred to their comedy group as the "Hack Pack". Shuli is one of those bitchy girls like Jason who feel the need to throw someone under the bus to gain more favor with Howard. He is always first to run in with his little comments, and every time he has an argument with someone on the staff he always waits to see who Howard sides with before he starts his bitchy rebuttal. Sal would be ok but he waits to see if Howard finds something funny first then he runs it into the ground. I like Sal and all but he does have to let go that Howard is not gonna find him funny all the time.

I like Shuli, but he did come in LAST place in the "Win JOhn's Job Contest".

So, by that measure we should take John the Stutterer and Chauncey Haden before him

3
Jones2248•

John the Stutterer would be good.

2
fearstrikesout•

shuli is awful.

sal could do it, i think, if he could restrain himself at times.

18
FlavorSki•

I doubt Sal can ever control himself. Which is why he is funny to call in to the studio and then kick him out when the time is right.

5
Vsinger2000•

Sal is good in small doses

2
Breakemoff•

Sal could not do it. You need a smart comedian in that chair. If you think about it, Artie is a pretty well-read guy. He made good pop-culture and historical references. Same goes for Jackie.

Sal is fucking hilarious, but I don't see him being able to keep up with Howard/Robin/Fred.

Shuli is a unfunny HACK!

16
Billie_•

There were no "Shuli weeks;" Shuli sat in for 3 days.

7
rekips•

To be fair, that's a Howard Stern "week".

13
Jones2248•

Fuck it felt like weeks.

5
StarslingerOPMac Hine•

Oh my bad thought it was 6 days.

How about the dude who was Beet's son?? The Beet interview was pretty awful until he showed up. Howard and Robin are not funny enough to carry any comedy interviews. Just get someone in there already. It's too damn quiet.

7
seidinove•

Even though he's not "talent," I'd give it to Will before those two. He's extremely good at goofing on any of the staff who come into the studio.

6
NineNumbers•

I don't find Will interesting or funny. He can be pretty moody too. Pass on that guy.

8
Bronkko•

yes, because moody never works on the show.. will is the most "howard" of all the staff.

1†
StarslingerOPMac Hine•

haha thats a random one, hes great at chirping but hes probably a bore, hence why howard keeps him off the air.

3
SayMahNameI see a Redditor and he be lookin' scared.•

Great call.

Illsonmedia•

Shuli will NEVER be a permanent in-studio guy. He's pretty good when Stern calls him in, in small doses, but Stern having the great instincts that he does, easily detects that people are getting annoyed quickly. Shuli overdoes it a bit, if he's in the studio for too long.

Sal won't ever be in the chair either, he's not smart enough. With that being said, I absolutely love Sal. He's a terrific back-office personality.

4
MethodFlux•

I agree, but he let that dude rappaport go on for too long today for sure

2
Bryfliesme•

Sal. Listening to Sternthology and Sal is talking about how he wanted to spend the night at Howard's. He is a NUT JOB!

4
ScottTheEngineer•

When was Sal in the studio?

3
rekips•

Put Doug Stanhope in there. The guy's a genius and did a great job before Artie but was too much for terrestrial radio.

2
DannyAndHisDinosaur•

Stanhope is a natural comedian and would be able to riff off of any of them. I think that would be really interesting, especially since both Howard and Doug are a bit more lowkey than the previous years.

3
kw0E972oZ9AD•

he should seriously bring back jackie, who cares about robin and fred, jackie will have less of an ego these days anyway, it would be a good wrap to the final year(s) of the show

2
BombTicker•

Its funny how Howard made fun of Jackie for so long about him thinking Howard's success rides on Jackie, but now if they don't get someone like Jackie to fill Artie's role Howard is actually fucked.

1
ericfishlegs•

Jackie was never as worthless as Howard thought he was and he was never as vital to the show as Jackie thought he was. I do feel like the decade and a half that have passed would make them both more humble.

2
PASS-IS-HUNTER2I love you all my life, and now I want to blow you.•

sal

1
Jobcv314•

I wouldn't give it to either of them.

If I had to, I'd pick Sal. But I think Howard has neutered Sal long ago. He's much more careful. If it was the Sal of five years ago or more maybe then.

At this point I'd rather see them establish someone from the outside. Although I guess because the show probably won continue past five more years it'd be harder to get a broad selection of people vying for the job. Also I doubt for budget reasons that job would pay the million a year Artie was previously getting. My assumption is if they gave it to anyone at this point it'd be to someone internally so there contact would be simpler and the paycheck could be lighter.

1
Aytri•

I bet a lot of comics would do it for peanuts and plugs.

1
Jobcv314•

Absolutely. Plenty of them do podcasts and would gladly do it for under 40k a year because it'd get them more exposure and more followers for their social media and podcasts. Plus just like Jackie and Artie did, the money from their standup shows goes up greatly when you're siting in the studio daily on the Stern show.

1
grownassmanchild•

I vote for Richard. His voice makes everything funny.

1
thedisciple516•

Phony phone calls are the only time Sal is funny when he is trying to be. Otherwise he is only funny when he puts his foot in his mouth and gets ripped apart. The Artie chair has to be someone who can be funny intentionally. As much as it pains me, I'd have to go w/ Shuli if forced to pick between these two.

1
HanSh0tF1rst•

You don't fill the Artie chair with someone below Artie chair standards just to fill it. And those guys are not on par with Artie by a mile. They are fine where they are.

1
bergamaut•

Having Sal in studio would diminish the brilliance of Sal.

Sal needs to be kept out of the circle. He needs to remain pathetic and begging for Howard's approval from the outside. Having Sal sit in the Artie chair would also make him happy--happy Sal is not funny Sal.

1
TomNJ•

JD for the Artie chair! I don't think he'd make it an hour before Howard's ripping on him became too much.
