Looking to upgrade 2000 Jeep Cherokee sound. No idea where to start.

I've never really done anything like this before but I do know about electronics and soldering and stuff like that. I am confident enough that I could do the install completely on my own without messing anything up. I just need a little guidance on getting a good quality clear sound.

When I first bought the jeep I installed a crappy jvc head unit with aux from Walmart and some also crappy Sony speakers from Walmart.

The jeep has 4 speakers. 2 in the front doors and 2 in the back in the ceiling. The sound and mix is a bit lacking. I usually adjust the fade to 2 in the front so it doesn't sound so spacey when I'm driving.

I don't really listen to rap or hip hop, so I'm not really looking for a good bump (so not looking for huge subs or anything), just clearer sound with bass that doesn't distort.

I would like to have a head unit with Bluetooth but aux is acceptable.

The jeep doesn't come factory with tweeters and I think that would help some especially with some highs as right now it seems to get mostly mids and crappy bass.

Not on a super tight budget but would like to keep it a little reasonable.

I am a musician myself and have a decently trained ear when it comes to mixing and levels.

I guess I'm just looking to be pointed in the right direction to equipment that won't completely break the bank but still deliver good clarity.

Sound like the Pioneer DEH-80prs head unit would be a good fit for you. What is your maximum budget? There are so many brands and models out there at so many different prices that its impossible to recommend a setup without a budget.

That Pioneer BeardedNole suggest is a very nice head unit. As far as speakers go, it looks like the Cherokee used 5.25 speakers all around. If that's accurate, I'd suggest: http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_61821_Infinity-REF-5002ix.html The BOGO-half-off deal makes them particularly alluring. They're not components, but you can aim the tweeters, which is nice. Will certainly sound better than stock.

For a few dollars more, these are very nice: http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_12267_JBL-P562.html

And if you're looking to save a few dollars on the head unit (though I do like the 80prs), this looks pretty serviceable: http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_92647_Sony-MEX-N5100BT.html Bluetooth, decent power, nice processing options. Not as pretty or as nice as the PRS, though.

Thanks so much. These look like great options that are definitely in my budget. I will probably go with the 80prs. All the reviews I've read for it are good and it seems pretty streamlined.
