You're welcome
Article says a 7 game series makes random luck more of a factor. Isn't the exact opposite true? Any team can win 1 game over another. To beat another team 4 out of 7, you have to be better than them.
It's not that a seven game series is more lucky, its that, once the series is over, a series that goes to 7 games could have more easily been determined by luck than a series that went to 6 games, or 5 or 4.
Basically, if the difference between the teams is one game, after they've played 6 and came out even, then that difference is small. A lucky bounce can be that difference.
But if the difference between the teams is two games (like if the best of 7 only goes to 6) then the difference is bigger, and it is harder for luck to have been the difference.
If you sweep and win 4 in a row you're more likely just better than them than you got lucky 4 games in a row. If you made it to 7, random luck and puck bounces can make the difference whether or not you win the series. It's not saying the winner is lucky, it's saying luck can help the winner of a 7 game series win the last game more than it helps a team that sweeps a series win the 4th game, if that make sense.
It makes game 7, the deciding game, more up to random luck.
The assumption is that the probability of winning one game doesn't affect the probability of winning the next.
One of the reasons I find this very interesting is because the more series go to Game 7, the less you can be sure the "better" team won. The reason for this is because the difference between winning and losing is smaller in a 7 game series than in a 6, 5, or 4 game series and so luck can be a large enough factor to be the difference.
In my opinion this is a bad think, I would prefer to know that a team won because it was better.
I believe referees are having more of a deciding factor in games which is leading to series being drawn out more so then they should be.
Do you mean that referee's are tending to favour the team that is behind? Because that's the only way I can see refs making series longer.
If it goes to 7 games, both teams are close enough to have deserved it. It all comes down to the seventh game and who can come out on top.
The "better" team is the one that wins four before the other.
They should play 21 game series
Not for us it isnt.
:(
Maybe it's because the Caps and the Rangers always see each other in the playoffs lol.
