Developer appreciation thread
We had a huge update yesterday night and I think we seriously owe the devs a thank you, some even a sorry.
While this update might have brought and might also in the future bring new problems a lot of things we asked for and wanted for so long were finally implemented in the game. No matter how long it took or why it took that time the devs delivered.
EDIT:
A comment by u/2014RT who appearantely works in software developement. He pretty much nails it why I and obviously a lot of others think we should have a little thx for the devs
I developed for a mod team in a different game, and currently develop software for businesses. We deal with publicly owned organizations and demanding clients who set our boundaries and schedules. Valve is privately owned and is rolling in cash. They do not have a specific client to please (other than customers) and deliver to on specific schedules. All of their development work for games like CSGO are on their self-imposed goals and schedules, and they are in control of their and their product's destinies.
While we all clearly believed that fixing CSGO was in the best interests of Valve, and certainly ourselves for the longevity and quality of CSGO, by all measurable metrics their community was already giving them an enormous vote of confidence. CSGO has been growing extremely well over the past two years, they're making a lot of money off of game sales and the community market, and the game community is more than healthy and extremely strong- the strongest of any competitive FPS any of us have ever played. This truly is a new golden age for competitive FPS play on the PC.
With that said, I think that everyone should appreciate just how uncommon it is for a company who is getting the signals from their customers that everything is fine, and they're doing everything right, to grind out fixes and attempt for perfection. CSGO would have gone on just fine and they would have continued to profit if they never worked on and released these changes. They would have continued making money and could have spent the past few months focusing mainly on developing immediately profitable content such as new skins, a new operation, or other such money grab gimmicks.
Valve is a prudent company, and have always played towards the long game unlike developers of other games. They understand that you cannot put a price tag on customer satisfaction and the loyalty it can gain. CSGO was good last week, but it's a lot better today. Many of us were already fairly loyal to Valve, and we all make jokes about "valve time" and the priorities of their company and developers falling in line with their bank statements, but to anyone who does not do technical work let me say this:
The changes they implemented with this release weren't just a fix of a few lines of code or a minor adjustment here and there. They are undoubtedly the result of a good deal of hard work and a concerted effort to iron out the most apparent and annoying problem areas in CSGO. Valve, with basically no major monetary benefit riding on their already wildly popular and profitable game, decided to dedicate resources towards streamlining and improving their already good product. While it would be easy to sit here and say something like "it's about time!" or "it should have been correct from the start!" like some sort of buffoon, the fact of the matter is they just made the best competitive FPS in the world much, much better, and I think that deserves an applause, acknowledgement from the community, and we should not easily forget this. Thanks Valve, we appreciate the work that went into this.
