So, my school has a LGBT club

So I just joined a new school and we just got told about the extracurricular stuff and holy shit, they have an LGBT club every Thursday after school for an hour. I'm not even out yet but really think this would be a good way to come out without making a big deal about it y'know?

The anxiety will probably stop me but I really, really wanna go. What kinda things would they do? Does this happen at any other schools? Argh I'm really happy but scared as shit at the same time...

Dude, you should go! Of course you're gonna be scared, but screw that; you can handle a little fear! This is a group where you know for SURE that you're gonna be accepted. Whatever fears you have of coming out or telling people, that group is the one place you never have to worry about those feelings.

Meeting people who understand on a deeper level what you're going through is the most liberating feeling you can have at your age. You get to talk to them about you sexuality, about theirs, how they handle the situation etc etc. But even apart from that... it's just calming and reassuring to be with people that understand, people that don't need words or explanations to understand who you are. Just hanging out with people in the same boat is really nice.

So stop making up excuses or horror scenarios in your head and go for it! You can do this shit! It's just like jumping in a really fucking cold swimming pool; before you jump you reaaaalllly don't wanna, but as soon as you're in it's freaking refreshing.

DO IT! 😄

Why isnt this a thing at my school? They already got signs up every 10 feet saying "Homophobia, Sexism, Racism or any form of bigotry will NOT be tolerated!"

Talk to someone and ask about if there used to be one, and maybe try to start one?

Just go. You don't have to talk or anything. Just sit in the back and watch at first.

First time I've heard about an LGBT club in the UK but you should definitely go and enjoy yourself, sit back and listen to what people say and maybe after a few weeks or whenever you feel comfortable then take part in a conversation

They're not often specifically called that.

True didn't really explain what I meant, I've not heard of any club relating to LGBT in any school I've been too or any school anyone I know has been too

I've heard of a 'respect' club, which is pretty thinly veiled if you ask me.

Never heard of that either

My school has a Gay-Straight Alliance and it's a really great way for people to express concerns about the community and themselves. I highly recommend you go to the meeting.

They have one at my school, but it's called Spectrum.

You should definitely go! Even as an out and proud gay teen, I was afraid to join my school's Gay Straight Alliance last year. But when my friend came out and wanted to join, I went with her to support her. Fast forward to now: I am currently co-president of the club, and I love it! :) I've met some really nice people through it and have formed lasting friendships even with graduates. It is such an amazing community where nobody will ever judge you. :)
