Starbound's Come A Long Way

And I'm impressed with it. I've often questioned the developer's update agenda, but regardless of my opinion on that, they have created something that has exceeded my expectations. I'm not saying that I thought this game was going to be horrible, it was just the lack of stable updates I started to lose faith.

Now, after legitimately buying the game (finally, with a decent enough job and paycheck) and playing again (it's not much time, but enough to make me interested once again) I applaud the developers for what they've created.

Now, if you'll excuse me, me and Ace Marlboro (my Novakid character) have a universe to explore and trouble to get into.

Really? Unfortunately, my expectations haven't been met yet. They're pretty close though. Just a few more tweaks.

This is where I am at as well. They are making big strides, but still lack very basic, crucial features like pausing. Still has a kind of "tech demo" feel to it, but definitely losing that feeling with each update.

This is kind of my problem with early access games -- and a lesson I learned from Starbound. I should just never play them in their earliest iteration, because they never lose that "tech demo" feel even after they're released.

That said, this game's come a long way -- convinced me to turn my "would not recommend" on Steam to a "would recommend" after that big update a few months ago.

To me it was a "give it a chance" feeling rather than "would/would not recommend."

Oh, dear God, yes! Pausing! My tooth was throbbing earlier when I was playing, pressed escape to hopefully pause the game and still saw creatures moving around. Started freaking out a little bit as I curled up into a ball holding my face.

Off the top of my head:

  • Keep windows in the place I put them. (This hasn't been fixed since the very first release)
  • Remove the annoyingly slow backwards walking speed.
  • Make guns/ bows use ammo
  • Make mining less tedious. (I'd suggest better particle effects and faster mining speeds)
  • Considering the effort they've put into making the randomly generated gun mechanic, guns should probably be more powerful than melee weapons. Also... Come on, guns should logically be more powerful than melee weapons.
  • Give melee weapons actual swinging animations instead of the one frame transition from "about to swing" to "swing complete". The "swing streak" overlay isn't enough to trick my eye into believing that the weapon is moving. It's even less unbelievable when it's a hammer.

EDIT: To the people who are disagreeing with me with downvotes, I'd really like to know why you disagree!

Some of those suggestions are terrible tbh.

Which ones? I'd like to hear your reasons. :P

I agree with your first and last point. The first point is pretty valid, and if possible i'd like a lock button to keep it in place too.

As for swinging animations I do hope they can improve on it. Heavy weapons doesn't give you the satisfaction of hitting something since it's just a weapon with low attack speed. There needs to be a slow swinging animation so that people could feel the weight of their attack, and if they don't do that there needs to be some sort of indicator to show the cooldown of the swing.

I haven't played enough of it yet to really give my two cents on the game, but from the bit I've played it's been good. The improvements that they have made have been good.

How did you illegitimately buy the game?

4
VanciousRexOP•

I'll be honest: I pirated it a few times here and there. Didn't have the money to really spend at the time. Always planned on buying it when I could. Well, now I legitimately own it.

6
nmhunate•

The way it sounded, I thought that you used counterfeit money or wrote bad checks to purchase the game.

VanciousRexOP•

Haha! This gave me a laugh! Nope... just torrents.

_ralph_•

at least fake torrents? ;)

1
Darkpursuer•

Torrents are still a valid way to "demo" the game... Steam's 2 hour/2 week gameplay restriction for refunds is still a little consumer unfriendly. Especially for a game like starbound, where you definitely have to play more than that to get into the good bits of the game.

I'm telling on you!

2
VanciousRexOP•

No! Please, no! Don't do that! I'll do anything -- anything!!!

Give me 600 pixels and it's a deal.

Marya_Clare•

Reminds me of my method of buying games, why play a demo when you can briefly play the full thing with no time limits?

Please note I eventually bought most of the games I previously pirated off Steam, as I don't own a credit card.

1
VanciousRexOP•

I'm the same way, but I try not to. Sometimes I just can't help it. I plan on buying most of the games I've torrented and enjoyed. Still not sure if I want to buy Crusader Kings II and all the dlc... pretty pricey.

In a day and age where companies are ammoral, consumers should be too.

I just go with "whatever won't get me sued by the RIAA".

I'm very excited about the future of Starbound. I'm already having a great time with the game even though there is still so much more to work on. I've recently been playing around with the Frackin' Universe mod too; it's a good sign that such impressive mods already exist, it is a testament to the talent of the community, not to mention the dev team for implementing powerful modding tools from the start.

3
VanciousRexOP•

I'll have to take a look at the Frackin' Universe mod sometime, but, yes, the future of Starbound is promising.

1
idg3t•

I'm glad someone has been satisfied, but I'm not even close...

Starbound has oozed and reeked of poor planning, management, and lack of progress since the beginning; there is no indication this is changing...

2
Nachodsk•

2 years still in Early Access, I can promise anyone that once they get out of Early access I will buy this game.

2
Pathosphere•

Please don't come in here and say that the current version exceeds your expectation. There are far too many games that leave early access because they are "good enough." If you haven't been following along since the beginning, your opinion is really not that valid.

VanciousRexOP•

I've followed Starbound for a long time. It's a lot better now than what it was when I stopped playing it which was quite a long time ago.

The developers aren't going to delude themselves based on some praise for the game. This post could do nothing but encourage the developers to continue working hard to deliver a solid game.

I'd like to hear about some examples among the "far too many" games that left early access because some people said the game was coming along well. And that also means providing evidence that that was indeed the reasoning.
