Out of curiosity, what would happen in the case of a perfect 50/50 seat split?

What would happen in the case where 2 parties each get 50% of seats? Apart from a recount how is this decided? What about in a single riding at 50/50?

The current leading party gets a chance to form a government first. So if it went 140 cons, 140 libs, the cons would get first shot at making a government. If they couldn't get another 30 votes from other parties, then the liberals would get a shot.

This is just off the top of my head and I cannot attest for its accuracy, but I believe that if two parties split the number of seats 50-50 then each leader goes to the Governor General and tries to make his case as to how he has the best potential to form a government. The decision will then rest with the GG. He picks a leader and that party forms the government. Of course it will most likely fall apart at the first confidence vote.

Bottom Line: I believe the decision rests with the Governor General

The incumbent would get first crack at it.

The two party leaders will face off in trial by combat.

Winner takes all

It's impossible because there are more than 2 parties. The NDP is going to win at least one seat tonight.
