Rejection
I don't want you,
walk-in-closeted, white-picket wonderland, or all your
2.4 suburban promises
of good catchment areas and gentrification.
I don't want you, ultrastylish city living
in converted poorhouses,
neighbouring up to oligarchs who
just don't see the irony.
I don't want you, perfect girl,
who never sweats or goes crazy,
who never hates herself and
doesn't know how to be
ugly,
spreading wide your glossy centrefold with
no secrets inside;
flawless, quantifiably geometric beauty
that doesn't understand poetry,
doesn't get how dirt can smell good sometimes.
I don't want you, whorish fame-child,
bratty young god of entitlement,
guttering up our ideas of aspiration,
shrinking down our dreams to
flat little catalogue pictures we can buy
on instalment plans;
I don't want you, easy desirability,
societally programmed lust,
"#HashtagPhilosophy"
and knee-jerk love affairs with
light and sound but no substance.
You're everything I'm meant to want,
and I don't want you.
I bet you're heartbroken.
