A Broken Soul

She cried and the tears rolled down her cheeks,
Speaking the pain that ripped through her soul and made her weak.
Her life was turmoil, a tug of war;
She never knew when she would be hit or torn.
Sheltered and scared to speak up,
She grew up believing the lies that she wouldn't amount to much.
That little girl grew up thinking that the bad people were good and the good people were bad,
All due to lies that she was told were fact.
That child grew up in delusion, abuse, and alone;
Little did she know that she was just a pawn.
She was taught that love was earned with grades and manners,
Not by just being who she thought mattered.
She grew up afraid and not knowing who she was deep down,
For she had become a replica of what was expected to be paraded in town.

That girl lost herself, or maybe she never found herself in life,
But at twenty, she had a breakthrough one night.
She realized she had a voice which deserved to be heard,
So she packed her bags and away from the abuse she turned.

But, you see, this isn't where it ends.
Though you think you escape the past,
It holds you prisoner and tears you to shreds even behind the mask.
That little girl is now grown,
A woman out in the world and on her own.
She hides the pain behind her accomplishments and forced smile,
Forever chained to the lies, every mile.
"You're unlovable," "You're ugly," "You're a freak,"
The tiny voices attack her and she starts to weep.

It's like a prison with no bars,
But the thing is, what she wrestles with causes so much harm.
She hates herself with such disdain,
Even more so because she feels instead of happiness, she feels pain.
That pain, a constant reminder of the past,
Makes her feel like she can't get rid of the mask.
The mask hides who she is deep inside,
A little girl who wants to be loved for who she is, alright.

But, the world is a corrupted place,
And so she steps out with her heart encased.
What has she learned, you might ask,
And the answer is that the world is black.
No matter how true she is and how much she gives life a chance,
It always turns into a lance,
Dicing away at her heart and soul.

She feels entrapped and cold,
Like the world is turning her into a role,
The very kind of person who stole,
Stole her childhood, mind, and life.
She feels the mask slipping as these thoughts dice,
Cutting into her fragile soul and causing that little girl fright,
For the one thing she fears most is becoming someone who could do that and still sleep at night.

It shatters her soul to think she could be that type,
But she knows, deep down, that abusive isn't who she is,
She's got a big heart that she keeps hid.
Hidden away under lock and key,
Her heart awaits a world filled with harmony.
She knows that is a mere childlike dream,
So, she gets used to the mask and they become a team,
Waiting to be loved for who she is,
Which she knows only she can give.
