Metaphor

Let’s write ourselves into a metaphor, you and I.
No similes- we are not like a storm tossed boat,
We are one, through and through.
Can’t you see my oars?
When I lay against you, I feel oak planks.
I hear waves slapping our sides.

We’re going to sail straight across the ocean, you and I.
Buoyed by unbridled imagination,
you can grow a mast and I will be your sail.
We’ll stay afloat, as long as we can make this symbol last.
As long as the beeping of your coffee maker doesn’t leak in through the cracks.
As long as we don’t realize that these stormy ocean winds are actually
the product of your window-unit air conditioner.

Let’s stay the course for a little while longer, love.
I know you have places to be,
and things to do,
But I have places to go and things to be-
A hundred million more metaphors to hide us in.

So lay back down.
Wrap your arms around me.
Darling, hold on tight.

Feel my bow, become my rudder.
Let us strain against the tide.
Give in to the illusion,
I want to brave this ocean one last time.
