The Man Of Châlons

#Man of Châlons

Past the horizon, beyond the last sea
After the starlit sky ceases to be
That is how long I will hold you to me
Long as the winds chase the last fragile dawn
That is how long you'll be precious, my heart
Though armies conspire to keep us apart
My love, my man of Châlons

"I love you, though all of the world be upend'd!"
Shakily-drawn looping letters you penned
On backs of eight silver-skinned angels have sent
Borne on winds chasing the last fragile dawn
Clutching these missives, my heart cut in two
Wrapped up and bundled in pieces of you
My rock, my man of Châlons

Your words are my sacrament, taken with wine
Greedily savored, each morsel is mine
Together we brave beyond enemy lines
Though bullets, like wind, chase the last fragile dawn
Felt through your eyes on some cold, lonely shore
Come, and unburden each terror, mon coeur
My hero, my man of Châlons

Autumn has come and eight letters arriv'd
None have come thence, though I pray for the ninth
Lingering, thrumbelling through my dull mind
Hope, as wind chasing the last fragile dawn,
Tastes fleeting and feeble and false in my mouth
Beautiful then's have not blossomed to now's,
Mon ange, my man of Châlons

We buried you here, at the edge of the sea
Long past horizons and stars cease to be
That is when I will quit holding to me
You, the wind chasing the last fragile dawn
And I, your sail catching you as you rush past
God's grace upon us, and rudderless cast
For thee, mon beau of Châlons
