With the weekend coming up...

How you do stay sober on weekends? For me going home after a long week of work and drinking really gave me something to do, something to escape with. How do you stave off the cravings when you are just sitting around with nothing to do? (I'm on home detention so I can't leave the house to go on a walk or hike or anything)

I stay sober on weekends by staying sober TODAY, only. Since I make a decision each morning that I am not going to drink TODAY, no matter what happens good or bad and it's always TODAY--then it doesn't matter if it's Thursday or Saturday.

I usually pick a show on Netflix and binge watch it. I also get a lot of ice cream and eat that whenever I have a craving. Once weekend my cravings were so bad I polished off 9 quarts of ice cream! haha but I didn't drink.

Also video games are great and so is reading. If I'm really uncomfortable, I'll meditate, take a hot bath and things like that to make my home space feel better. Also don't forget about exercise....you could play a game....when the cravings come do either sit ups, push ups or something like that and do as many as you can in 5 or 10 minutes or something like that.

And since you're on Reddit - be sure to post here and read the side bar at the right. Lot's of good stuff over there.

Try to plan ahead, it seems like you already are. For me, weekends seemed like they were going to be an impossible task. For the past 2 weekends I've managed to stay sober. For me, it's like this strange reversion to childhood, in the best way possible. It's like the way you used to feel when you sat at home with your parents and watched TV, just happy that they were letting you stay up past 9 pm. It's not super "fun" and it might not even be relaxing at first, but remember that you're fragile right now. Try to embrace the pros of spending the weekend in, rather than hating all of the cons. Eat a lot of dessert foods, watch a TV show you love or try a movie you've always wanted to. Shop online and splurge way more than you should, get your Christmas shopping started! Decorate your house! Bake xmas cookies!

Last weekend was my first without drinking in a long time. On Friday I ate one of my favorite meals, made chocolate chip cookies, got a new game for the ipad while watching tv. I think it's important to give yourself other things to look forward to besides drinking.

It all sounds lame, but it's amazing how when you decide to stop drinking, you just start looking forward to different things. I used to think, "it Friday, can't wait to have some beers and sleep in late" now I still get just as excited for the weekend but instead I'm looking forward to making fajitas and finding a good show on netflix.

It is definitely trigger time for me. Uv been cooking and cleaning, reorganizing things. I drink lot of different non-alcoholic drinks. I like to play phone app games and watch Netflix too but when it gets really bad I can't sit still and that's when I clean or do something physical.
