BFZ+, an expansion to Battle for Zendikar
Previously: ORI+, an expansion to Magic Origins
After about 15 drafts of BFZ, my drafting group at work was ready for a little change. I had a blast doing this for the last set, so I did it again: 24 new uncommons, printed on blank foils and added one per pack in an 8-person draft. They were designed to make the underpowered color pairs more viable (especially the green ones) and just to shake things up in general.
Here's a spoiler image, and here they are all printed out.
Turns out, it's much more challenging to do this for an expert set than a core set. Working with so many mechanics in just 24 cards felt pretty crowded, and making tasteful additions to such strongly established archetypes took a lot of effort. In the end, these definitely aren't balanced, but I don't know if any of them are more broken than premier BFZ uncommons like Grip of Desolation, Stasis Snare, and Coastal Discovery. There was one game where someone played T4 Eyeless Watcher, T5 Scurrying Cannibal, T6 Desolation Twin, and later swung for 38 unblockable damage after casting Asphyxiating Fumes.
It was a ton of fun. If anyone else is hesitant to try out their custom cards, I wholeheartedly recommend it! And yes, I know Erasure Titan isn't an uncommon, and I know Starved Geopede is very strong and overlaps with Oran-Rief Hydra -- but green needs love, dangit!
