Is this legal? Post in [r/interestingasfuck](https://www.reddit.com/r/interestingasfuck/comments/3vr0fz/truck_driver_completely_nails_holiday_lighting/)
There's a bit of discussion about non standard lighting on cars but I don't believe the laws are exactly the same for big rigs?
Picture is apparently NJ according to exit signs visible.
I'm on mobile and can't get njdot PDFs to open. What's the word, r/legal advice?

No.
According to the link you gave in NJ (d) provides a possible permission if the truck operator paid a $25 fee (for the green lights, no charge for red or blue) and got the proper permit? Being that obvious, the driver would be nuts to be running flat-out illegal.
I was always under the impression big trucks had a slightly different set of guidelines than passenger cars - there are a LOT of trucks on the road with green and blue lights in the area of the fifth wheel. TIL.
Follow up question, could you have lights inside the car? Say, a string of Christmas lights hooked up through the cigarette lighter socket that are just sitting on the floor of the car or something? Or would that still be illegal illumination?
It would likely depend on how visible it is from outside the car. When looking into lighting laws a while back, I remember one section about how lights can't move, flicker, flash, etc. However, it's not about whether the lights themselves are flashing, but whether they appear to be - the example given being lights installed in the wheel well behind the tire. As the tire moves, the light would appear to flash, making it illegal even if the color, etc was otherwise perfectly legal and the lights themselves weren't flashing.
TL;DR: It would depend entirely on what it looks like from outside the vehicle.
So basically this is a super grey area, ok.
