Question

I'm looking for a location in Great Britain which fits my criteria:

  • Forest / Wilderness
  • Near Ocean or Lake
  • Low Light Pollution
  • Can easily drive to and camp overnight.

I'm looking for somewhere scenically beautiful that I can show my friends on our road trip. The British equivalent to Yosemite but near the ocean.

I would second the recommendation of Scotland - in particular, I would recommend visiting the Argyll and Bute region. Oban is a really great area to start with.

Nearby attractions - Glencoe, Rannock Moore, Loch Shiel, Glenfinnan to name a few. Completely tucked away from any light pollution - never seen stars so bright before, as up in Oban.

Something in Scotland maybe? North and south of Glasgow and Edinburgh are some national parks that could fit your description. Here's a neat interactive UK light pollution map. I can't say if they are beautiful though, never been to any of these parks.

Scotland is a great suggestion, but also consider Northumberland and Cumbria (the Lake District).

Northumberland borders the North Sea and has plenty of forests and low light pollution if you're away from the larger towns. Cumbria has much more dramatic scenery (although not like Yosemite!), but less attractive coastline.
