Weird hard freezes when gpu engages

Hi all,

I'm a tech support type myself (service management, ex-2nd line), but I'm having some weird issues with my personal desktop.

I'm running with a two year old i5, and a corsair TX550M,with 1 6GB DDR3 and a new, two week old gtx 970

Under some conditions, it works absolutely fine (GW2 and FFXIIIs pc port spring to mind as what I've tried most recently but the moment I open certain games past the menu, (AC:S gets to the point I actually reach the game, the animus load screens run fine) or run benchmarks like Fire Strike, graphics stop being passed to the monitor, every fan in the box goes into overtime, and any audio being played slows by a factor of about a hundred (the windows 10 alert sound takes about 5 seconds to play)

My FanSpeed has come up with no overheating (and from from a cold boot my GPU shouldn't overheat near instantly anyway), the Intel Processor utility came back clean, and I'm running MemTest passes, but they are clean so far.

I'm not really sure where to look next, any suggestions?

Your CPU may be causing a bottle neck causing everything else to slow down with it. Or you may just need a bit more ram. Personally I'd never use less that 8gb with any gaming rig

The CPU has never been a problem before, and there's an erroneous space in there, it should be 16GB, not 1 6 :)

It may simply not be able to keep up with the speed at which the 970 needs to receive data. It's unlikely but possible. Did the drivers install properly? Did you uninstall the drivers for your precious card?

Yes to both driver questions.

What confuses me is that I got a solid week before anything happened.

Does the memtest you use scan gddr? You may actually have a defective card. Also try taking the card out and wipe the pins with a static/lint-free cloth
