Face-petting is indeed removed.

"It's rumor at this point, but if true: congrats Tumblr! You erased a lesbian character!"
lmfao
Shame they censored it though, even if I wasn't going to use it
I'm ready to see /feg/ whine more
The baddest thing about that image is yourselfs instead of yourselves.
And the "baddest" thing about your comment is baddest instead of worst.
I SAW THAT EXACT SAME COMMENT THERE.
Holy shit! Really?
I made that image. I can't believe I fucked that up.
Now this may be a naive question, but how in the world does someone reach the logical conclusion of that tweet?
Reaching harder than Reed Richards
That is some delightful alliteration.
My jimmies have been thoroughly rustled...
Hey! I made that photo!
noice
kill yourselfs
I don't know how I messed that up, I'm usually a sticker for grammar.
And I'm a stickler for spelling.
"It's rumor at this point, but if true: congrats Tumblr! You erased a lesbian character!"
I'm out of the loop here, is there a rumor circulating that Soleil was removed entirely?
I'd heard they had changed her character some, but was she removed entirely now or something?
No, I'm assuming that people are saying that Soleil's whole attracted to women thing has been removed and she's straight, but I have no idea. I don't think soleil has been in any gameplay shown so far.
Ah, I was worried she was removed entirely, as that would definitely be something to complain about.
Yeah, worse than the whole face rubbing minigame. The removal of an entire character would be terrible.
...What? How does a lesbian character factor into it?
Hoping for the replacement mechanic to just be a chat with character, be a shame to only see those models in confessions plus there's some interesting pieces of dialogue in the skinships amongst... everything else that I wouldn't want to see gone.
My money is on everything playing the same, get to My Castle, select character that you would pet, skip petting part and just automatically get the support boost.
Cutscene instead, amirite?
Nintendoeverything is quickly becoming one of the least reliable sources. George DID NOT confirm face petting was removed, he just confirmed the Woolslayer statement we got before:
"Thanks for contacting us. I can certainly understand your concerns about the situation. At this time, the removal of the petting mini game in Fire Emblem Fates has not been announced. More importantly, we do not have any information that tells us this will or won't happen, but I will pass along your comments to the departments which make those decisions.
If or when we do make an official announcement about Fire Emblem Fate, we will share all the exciting details on our website (www.nintendo.com)>
Sincerely,
Nintendo of America Inc. Richard Woolslayer
That's what he was asked about, and was his response:
Double-checked and the statement Nintnedo provided you is correct.
So they...confirmed that Nintendo confirmed that they hadn't confirmed anything yet?
Pretty much. Well... Nintendo confirmed nothing was confirmed, Nintendoeverything took that non-confirmation to mean the removal of face petting was "reconfirmed".
Can anyone confirm that confirmation?
I can confirm that Nintendoeverything confirmed that someone confirmed that Nintendo confirmed that they hadn't confirmed anything, which may or may not confirm something.
George DID NOT confirm face petting was removed, he just confirmed the Woolslayer statement we got before:
How did you arrive at this conclusion? Nathan Grayson, the guy tweeting the new response, works for Kotaku and wrote the original article that started all this, he had nothing to do with the reply from Richard Woolslayer. Grayson just got a reply confirming that the information HE was given was correct (petting being 100 percent removed, as he stated in his original article.
and yet we have no official announcement, at this point hes balls deep to back down from his original statement personally I think Grayson is full of shit but hey that's just me
The issue is the vagueness of the reporting (lots of information, but not all in one place).
To start off, the linked tweet (at the top of this thread) has the email statement by Woolslayer a few tweets up the conversation, confusing people further. The way the conversation reads does imply that the email reply confirms the Woolslayer statement, not the statement provided in the Kotaku article. However, the people he tweets to are in separate conversations asking separate questions about what Nintendo is confirming (is petting out vs. is Woolslayer statement true).
Then we have the tweet you linked:
I asked if petting was out. in a statement (which appears in my article), they said yes. that one
So...they are just confirming the statement that was in the Kotaku article. Which leads to this twitter conversation:
https://twitter.com/Vahn16/status/692472386508165120
So, if the author directly asked "are you removing the touchscreen-based petting feature?" and the response was "“Yes, that is the case", and he was the only one that asked and reported back on it...
The author has no incentive to be dishonest. So at least from one source (one author's perspective) it seems the feature is convincingly removed. Not exactly great to have only one source and other sources kinda parroting the original, but that's part of what all the debate is about. Just how much of it was axed and not just changed/replaced, no one knows for sure.
@Erica_Bueno524 san francisco, last week, and 'are you removing the touchscreen-based petting feature?' respectively
@SaiyaMon2 @Erica_Bueno524 that's an easy one: because I was the only person who asked
^This ^message ^was ^created ^by ^a ^bot
The actual twitter flow from the tweet linked in this article shows the Woolslayer email being asked about, Nathan said he'd pass it along, and returned with Geroge's response.
Go back to the tweet I posted. Right above Grayson is replying to somebody asking which statement he asked for clarification about (Woolslayers or the original that Grayson receive.)
Question, what was the exact statement you had them doublecheck?
I asked if petting was out. in a statement (which appears in my article), they said yes. that one
"That one" meaning "that is the statement I had them doublecheck" which means that he was asking about the original statement he got from Nintendo that he referenced in his article.
Wait a minute... he replied to both @reallyfeelingya and @jakeparker5012 in two different twitter chains saying that email was the answer to their questions. But they weren't the same question...
What the Hell is going on!?!
This is the first thing I thought seeing this. You cannot have enough upvotes.
thank you, I thought my English comprehension was in the shitter since this is what i understood from the tweets. thank god a statement stating that a previous statement confirming that said statement didn't say anything with regards on content being added or removed was a true statement meant just that
I am afraid that this means that even with the incredible might of a change.org petition, we won't be able to protect our fundamental right to face rub.
The dream is dead. NoA have single-handedly killed waifuism.
"Anime was a mistake" -NoA 2016.
"Fire Emblem was a mistake."
-Shouzou Kaga
"If I can't pet my waifu's face then what even is the point?"
-Shouzou Kaga
This was probably planned from the start. They won't bring it to NA because it requires additional voice acting.
Good now we can just completely stop talking about this entirely blown out of proportion madness and all go back enjoying our pffffftthhaahahaha oh god the storm has only just begun kill me
There, there, witch. It'll be okay, someday.
...I would pat your back, but I've been informed that I can't. :P
Someone will hack it in
I guarantee it.
Backrub minigame when.
Wyrdy no, why did you go out of the safety zone
Was just thinking of saying this and I realized how the world has already begun to burn slightly brighter today lol...
Hey, at least you can be 99.9% sure that you don't have to eat a hat now.
Well, congrats to the people who called it.
Can't say this really affects me, other than making my morning train ride less awkward.
Same here. Not terribly upset or happy at the removal at this point. I would like to know if we have "non-petting" Live2D conversations or something in its place, but it doesn't look like we'll know about that until release.
Better be replaced with something that makes the game worthwhile (other than the game itself xD)
What worries me is there hasn't been confirmation of any replacement mechanic yet. A lot of people have suggested a non-interactive conversation take place where at least you could still view the Live2D character renders, but I'm skeptical we'll even get that anymore.
Yeah, I'm skeptical at this point of something being there to replace it. Which is a shame beacuse if they don't have something else then it's charging the same amout of money for a lesser product (even if it is a pretty minor feature)
Still, if face-rubbing is out, my question is what else got cut? RIP hot springs?
Hot springs are confirmed still in.
[deleted]
Bottom screen replaced with the image of a teacup. Stir the tea correctly to make whoever you invited happy!
...I would actually really love if it was replaced with a "hang out" or "tea party" feature instead. I think it would be really cute, but still intimate and still conducive to "mini-support" conversations.
That would be so cute! You could keep the extra dialogue but not have the awkward "Stop touching me" and "What do you think you're doing?" lines that so many characters like to say.
Arthur starts tearing up. "Mother used to serve tea like this, you know."
oh god my heart
No chance if it happening but it'd awesome if Corrin's room was a place where characters could just hang out and talk in groups like with base conversations. Although they'd always need to involve Corrin since it is his/her room.
god no I hate spinning games on the touchpad, Poffins destroyed my OG DS' Screen
Cooking Mama: Fire Emblem Boogaloo
I kinda wouldn't mind this in a sense. I mean it's the Poffin Mechanic from Pokemon Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum. But what I want is a Maid Cafe.
Make an all maid my castle team, people have already started figuring out the best way to make the strongest maids.
How do you do it
I'd actuallly enjoy that. Much less weird than the weird petting thing, and actually somewhat respectable.
er why
fire emblem got along perfectly fine without lame minigames to get support points before, but now they're somehow necessary?
Im so confused by the attitudes i see in this subreddit now. Maybe im just being narrow minded but all i can see is people complaining that they cant be as pervy in a series whose purpose isnt to be pervy.
It's more like, it's there in the JP version, AFAIK it's optional, so why not just keep it for the English version?
You're right. I see it being more culturally appealing in Japan than overseas, but i dont see why it needs to be taken out if its already there.
I dont care either way. Its and odd, useless feature to me and a distraction from the rest of the game.
Maybe im just being narrow minded
Yes. Yes you are. As I said above you, it's the principle of the matter (Japan gets a feature that we don't and a possible gap is left in it's place) than the feature itself.
The principle of a Japanese game getting features that dont appear in its overseas copy (which happens with just about 99% of games) is insignificant if you dont care about the feature itself.
I find it really hard to believe that anyone who doesnt care about this feature is as pissed off as you seem to be that japan got something that they dont want.
Edit: also someone else pointed out that the file sizes of the english games are larger than their Japanese counterparts, hinting at maybe other differences that swing in our favor
well i can see why some call it unnecessary, and I do agree the game will be fine without it. But the bigger picture I see here is that they're taking out an entire gameplay mechanic with no confirmation on whether it would be replaced with something acceptable and if there isn't, the Japanese version will have the better features and create a distinct region variation. This is probably exaggeration, but games shouldn't exclude mechanics from different regions, no matter how significant they may be to the story of the game itself
You're reading this wrong. It's not that we want that feature per say, it's just that we want something there, because otherwise Nintendo is charging approximately the same amount of money for a game that has less in it than it's eastern counterpart.
I guess that just leaves the question of what did they replace it with, is the high quality models still being used with it, and if we can still get the accessories that were tied to the minigame in the localized version.
I mainly care if the benefits are still in (as its nice to support grind in Birthright/Revelation without level grinding) and if the post minigame lines are still in as removing them cuts out a lot of dialogue especially for the poor Corrinsexuals
Support grinding barely makes a difference according to people who've played the game. I myself wanted to see the dialogue since there looked like there was a lot of characterization from it.
Like others have said, I reckon they're going to still use the hq models, but instead of petting them, you instead just talk to them. Then you've got the models being used, characterisation isn't taken away, and maybe you will still get bonuses from it; everybody wins (apart from the people who actually were just in it for the petting aspect).
I will commend Nintendo/Treehouse if that turns out to be true.
As will I. I frankly don't care about the skinship stuff getting cut, but I do think it would be nice to replace the feature with something for those with a different stance to me on localisation/censorship.
After all, more people happy = more sales for Ninty.
I hope this is true. Not only does not using them waste some good high-def models, but some of the stuff that they would say after all the petting adds deeply onto their characters and even reveal some stuff you'd never get otherwise. Plus, you get some very eerie foreshadowing if you rubbed faces with Xander or Takumi and you married them.
That does seem like the most likely scenario. And honestly I would prefer this. The only strange part of this was the petting. It would also explain the IGN video screenshot and Kotaku saying that petting is out.
Yup, if it wasn't for that ! above the treehouse, I would probably be thinking that nothing was going to be replacing petting.
Can confirm, I did not notice a difference.
How the system worked was you'd rub people until they talked to you right?
Sounds like a really easy fix to have the "rubometer" stat full and go in to the conversations on frame 1
[deleted]
Is anyone else disappointed with Nintendo as a company lately. It is really lame. Region locking, no unified accounts, collectors editions shortages (seriously even my local EB games was told they are not allowed to take ANY pre-orders for FE:F) and censorship/removal of content.
Really losing faith in Nintendo.
Don't forget Nintendo's policy on Let's Plays.
And PM ;_;
PM?
What's that?
If Nintieth's referring to Project M, then he's overreaching, since Project M was never officially recognized by Nintendo and was disbanded because the developers wanted to make legitimate games. As for 'ousting' Project M from official tournaments as Nintendo signed on...well, what did you expect from a mod>
I actually just got a 3DS last year and I'm starting to regret it. It's pushing me back to my usual gaming platform, PC. Nintendo games have high production values, but I feel compared to indie PC games, their lacking innovation and focus towards an adult audience.
Petting doesn't make it more mature. It even gives off a juvenile and immature vibe.
Agreed, as a feature I didn't plan to/ want to use, as long as we get an equivalent for support, I'm more than fine with this, I'm glad.
[deleted]
This is a perfectly logical thing to remove because it has a completely different context (that's much more intimate, and much less creepy) in Japan than it does in the West. I'm hoping for some replacement so you can still see the models, but there was honestly no way this was ever going to make it across.
Is there something creepy about two fictional characters being intimate in private?
Two is fine. Not 40. And not when 6 of them are your siblings
The Orgy mode must have slipped by me.
different context
how so? petting seems like one of those things that would mean the same thing everywhere
Facial contact and touching just has a much different tone in Japan, much like calling someone by their first name without honorifics has a different tone there. In the West it comes across almost as voyeuristic and fetishy, while in Japan it's just a very intimate and harmless, but meaningful, gesture.
In the West it comes across almost as voyeuristic and fetishy, while in Japan it's just a very intimate and harmless, but meaningful, gesture.
I keep reading this but I've never seen any evidence for it. I can't imagine actual Japanese players find bringing units into your private quarters and rubbing their face to be normal or "meaningful" behavior.
Voyeurism? That implies the other party isn't aware. That's certainly not the case.
Same feelings, although it feels like it has been going on for much, much longer. This matter here is just the newest, small addition sitting atop the more expansive pile.
Figuring the NX will be the make or break for me, and I'm skeptical enough of it as is.
Valve and Nintendo both making stupid decisions recently. Not sure there is even 1 gaming company im satisfied with still.
Isn't this just as bad as the Kotaku article? The PR rep didn't actually confirm face petting was removed, Nintendo Everything made that leap. The PR representative said that the information Nintendo gave was correct. And the original quote was
"You might have heard somewhat misinterpreted or exaggerated information about the Japanese original game," a representative for Nintendo told Polygon, "but even in the Japanese original version, we have not included any features which are considered inappropriate in Japan.
"Having said that, however, making changes are not unusual when we localize games, and we have indeed made changes in these games."
So basically, this doesn't confirm shit, guys. Nintendo Everything is being just as click baity as Kotaku here.
Still at stage 1 huh
No, i don't see a confirmation of anything but a wishy washy pr statement.
No he's right. All Richard did was confirm the Woolslayer message about the decision not having been made yet was a 'correct statement'. There isn't even evidence he was directly asked about the face-petting, only the Woolslayer email.
no people are in full blown denial, doing anything to discredit Kotaku and I'm sure they'll try and discredit Jose Otero too
Except Nintendo's PR guys never said anything about facerubbing? They said some generic PR statement that was meaningless and Kotaku interpreted it to mean facerubbing, and people followed. Nintendo never confirmed or denied it.
[deleted]
Are we still talking about this? I thought everyone had taken up ghasts offer to play Gaiden instead.
I wouldn't have used the feature much but I REALLY don't like it if it really will be removed. I'd rather decide for myself whether I will use a certain feature than have Nintendo hand-hold me and cut content from a game I paid a good amount for.
Technically, they're aren't cutting anything that you've paid for.
Eh, I could have worded it better but my point still stands. If they cut start cutting out features that aren't insubstantial and the price isn't lowered it kind of rubs me the wrong way.
So what would you value each component of the game at? How much is Fire Emblem amie worth out of the $40 price? How does this affect any potential replacement features? Serious question here.
I didn't think that much on it but would you be saying these same things if for some reason NoA had cut out the feature to have children or support conversations and the price stayed the same? The petting feature aren't as big as those but it still had quite a bit of effort put into it (models, extra lines, etc.).
I mean, at the end of the day it's not a big deal to me but it still bugs me that they just cut content out, I really dislike censorship and being babysat by a company and so my opinion of NoA keeps going down.
Am i the only person who finds the whole feature just odd...
Does the majority of the FE fanbase want this? Am I weird for being a FE fan who doesnt want to interact with characters in this way? Just seems to be a really awkward distraction from the main purpose of the game.
Most are indifferent. It's more of people hating having content removed than actually disappointed that they will no longer get a chance to try it.
The people who are up in arms over content being removed do not understand game development and localization.
Not really. Content being changed is one thing. Features removed altogether is quite another.
Changing dialogue? That's okay, and has always been okay
Ripping out features entirely? Name me ONE time that has been acceptable in the past.
Acceptable personally or by the masses? I can't speak for everyone, but I've personally never really had any issues with these sorts of changes
I mean, I never really used the Game Corner (hated it, really), and I did understand the changes made to it. I was sad to see the message regarding the closure in ORAS but that was mostly because a piece of the series tradition was gone. And yet I still don't really care about it.
I wasn't super into the idea of the petting thing, but I'm still disappointed that localisation forced it out of the original game. Altering a game to be friendlier to a certain demographic (in this case the West) is understandable from a sales perspective, but if we ever want to see parity between localised versions of a game, someone has to take the risk of not doing any localisation at all. I think a uniform experience no matter where you live is preferable, but that can only happen when people are open-minded, which can't happen if everyone perpetuates localisation. Nothing will change.
We understand it, and that's exactly why we're so mad about it.
That's your decision, and you may respond as you see fit. I personally do not understand the point in getting all worked up over this. Hell, this is reminding me of that little incident regarding the Tin Tower becoming the Bell Tower and how some people got angry at that.
I found it pretty skeezy to be honest. It was a weird direction to take the game.
Really the only thing in common with Fire Emblem fans is that they like tactical RPGs. Some FE fans like sports games too, while others hate sports games. I tend to be one of the few FE fans who actually likes games with romantic elements and character interaction in it, so this is a kind of feature that appeals to me. Sure, it probably doesn't appeal to a lot of FE fans, I don't really think anyone thinks that this feature is a must-have. Most probably don't care. But it is very disappointing for the few people who do care, so it makes sense that they'd get upset when the feature is removed. (Plus, angry people are always the most vocal.)
vocal minority
I hope so. I dont really want to see the fanbase push the series in this direction. I've been somewhat secluding myself from news of the game until it comes out but all i can see is people foaming about minigames. If i didnt know better, they were making a FE version of Feel The Magic XX:XY
I'm glad they removed it, I don't want to have to get characters to like me by petting their face when I'm in a store or something .-.
I don't get the "I don't want to be seen petting people in public." It's not something you have to do immediately (if at all) and the benefits are minimal. Besides your spouse, your selection of characters is limited and you have to wait for it to refresh. What you could get is people peeking over your shoulder and judging you for playing that game with the creepy feature.
The problem is standing in lines for stuff or sitting somewhere waiting in a line and you're playing, it's not like people want to look over your shoulder but if they catch a glace of you petting someone's face it'd be a little strange. Most people who really judge you for it are old people who think that is the entire game. People always questioned when I was petting Pokemon and called it cute but I don't think they'd have the same reaction.
What I'm saying is that you can simply choose not to play that part of the game in public and they will probably never know it even exists.
While it maybe removed it is not yet confirmed.
No, you aren't. It's indeed a very awkward mechanic.
meanwhile, u/asaver stares at this thread, sipping on r/fireemblem's tears and petting Odin's face on his Fates Special Edition because you can't touch them below the neck
HIS BLOOD HUNGERS!
For your touch.
Oh I'd gladly touch him alright.
Sorry, that feature got cut.
Not in my version :^)
What about me?
I'm not into little girls, Morgan.
REST IN SPAGHETTI
NEVER REGRETTI
seriously tho kinda glad I wont have to be judged playing a game where I can go an start rubbing my big titty sister's face.
S to the P to the aghetti SPAGHETTI!
This is an immaculate bot.
Please u/blindcoco, don't kill this one.
This is an immaculate not.
If only your typing skills were immaculate...
Whatever do you mean, I didn't say that :^)
That reminds me of when u/blindcoco lost to the flip coin bot, so he had to keep them
I didn't lose! I let him win!
But right after that, the bot mysteriously stopped working.
#BotsLivesMatter
I'm watching you coco...
Is this bot actually Papyrus in disguise
No, if it were it'd be in all caps.
Japed again by reddit!
Be proud that you get to rub your big tittied sister and they can't.
Yeah Soelil definitely was a respectful lesbian pfttttttt "character".
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
HOLY SHIT, how blind do you have to be?
First off she's like the most fucking tropism character in the series AND SHES NOT EVEN A LESBIAN SHE CAN ONLY MARRY GUYS!
I really wish they could of localized her to S-Support more grills
Me too.
The poster doesn't actually think that, it's just a tepid burn to try and get back at the 'other side' of the culture war. Don't take it too seriously.
I know the poster didn't say this.
I wish they'd localize her to make her boy-crazy so we could finally have this games version of Sain (not sure who the original flirt was, sorry) be a woman.
Alec :D
Thanks
YES, this is what I've been trying to tell people, she's a really crappily written fake lesbian trope character. Her character deeply bothered me because she was such a piss-poor representation of the LGBT community.
Well, I'm not really affected by that anyway.
I bet we're gonna get a towel minigame instead, where instead of petting you use towels to try to cover as much as their bodies as possible in the name of censorship.
I heard "towel minigame" and was imagining a locker room towel whipping thing, really disappointed now.
Who else but... hey wait a minute
if it helps I was imagining leo and his retainers so that kind of is who else but
Why is this so easy to see? The little bros get the best retainers
I actually support this 100% tbh. I get that it's removal of content, but I feel like stuff like this (and the butt windows for female generals) are just sorta trashy. I know that it's optional, but I feel like all the creepy fan service just sort of lowers the game's overall quality. This is just sort of my opinion though, and just 'cause I personally hate the skinship doesn't mean that it should be removed. Nintendo probably did it because a lot of little kids play Fire Emblem.
[deleted]
Lol not exactly. There's a difference between wearing less clothes (like Rinka) or dressing up like that because it's part of their character (like Charlotte) and just dressing that way because it's creepy pandering to dudes / ladies with fetishes (ass windows, Odin, Nowi's outfit). I dunno, maybe I'm being overly weird about this
Well, I didn't really want it before, but now that I can't have it I'm outraged.
I hope they at least incorporate the models somewhere. I am not sad about petting being removed I am sad about nice models being removed :c
I know they use them for the "confession" scenes.
Except Kanna, since there is no such scene for them.
Oh cool so I can still view them on one character, once per playthrough. Yeah that's totally just as good.
You can also view them on a little thing I like to call Google Image Search.
I didn't say it was, just that the models are probably still there.
Yet

THAT'S IT
CANCELING MY PRE-ORDER /s
wait gamestop already did that for megamestop's got your backSame, I had zero interest. But wtf, if I was excited for it I would be pissed, it's not like it's titty rubbing
I actually did care about it before. I watched a bunch of videos of it in the Japanese version and it was something I looked forward to. Of course, not as much as the actual tactical RPG gameplay, but it was a minor feature I thought would be interesting to try out.
I'm sorry I have a different opinion on this than the rest of the Fire Emblem fans.
Yeah, fuck us for actually wanting this feature right? Apparently we're the cancer that's killing
/b/r/FireEmblem or some stupid shit like that. Getting a bit tired of seeing assholes actively celebrating the removal of content just because they didn't want it.C R E E P Y
