Need help designing a video streaming/caching solution on top of a rasberry Pi

So I was talking with a friend and he proposed something I found interesting and I was curious if there was already a pre-built solution for. If not I plan to design one for the fun of it. Basically he wants some kind of device (probably a rasberry PI) that can be configured and sent out to vendors to be plugged in to a TV. It should have a youtube or vimeo playlist that it cycles through but that it can cache until it detects a change (basically because a lot of these vendors have limited bandwidth). It should be remotely update able with a new list of videos. The basic idea being that a non-technical person can plug it into their TV, put in the WiFi credentials and then let it run. It would continuously play videos and would automatically detect and cache new ones.

I thought this was an interesting problem and I think I have an inkling of a solution but I wanted to toss it out here as well to see if anyone had a solution configured already.

We use it at work. Works pretty good. Dunno if it supports wifi yet, but I know they're working on that.

Put in the wifi credentials how? The raspberry pi is a great device but its not suited to be built into a consumer device for end users. Not easily at any rate.

not suited to be built into a consumer device

How do you know that?

Just from my company I know of quite a few systems with Pi embedded.

Put in the wifi credentials how?

Just like 100s of other IoT devices do.

  1. Wake up in AP mode.
  2. Client device PC or Phone connects to AP
  3. Sets SSID and Key for local WiFi.
  4. Reboot.

OR

Plug in a usb keyboard.

edit: clarity

The second you have them plug in a usb keyboard, it stops becoming a non technical device you just throw on to a tv.

Name one consumer system that uses a pi embedded.

Honestly I can build a gui to handle the input from a remote if I need to. In fact that's probably the route I'd want to go. But before I from scratch build a program to do it I was mostly checking to see if there was a prebuilt solution.
