Ancient Affair
Ancient lover of kings and queens
Casts her gaze unto the mirror
With her Sumerian stare.
Memories of royal affairs, history’s infidelities
Play across the spotless, glassy surface.
Behind her own illusion.
She slides her long clawed nail across the images.
From the face of the first to Mark Antony.
Reveling in crimes against Eve, Cleopatra.
When times were fun.
How many kingdoms fell?
The cause a stolen glance.
A thousand years of hour glass sand
Cannot erode her power.
A flick of the tongue, an eye batting spell.
The drip, drip, of blood and spit.
Flowing rivers of sweat.
Her pent house hovers over this modern L.A.
Given to her for no more than a wink
Then yawning. Goes off
To bars, and clubs, plucked fresh off the street.
A farmers market (easy fresh meat).
She consumes their shaky fingers, their swollen lips, their cloudy eyes.
And more.
Because no one sees the leathery wings, or horns.
Those predatory teeth.
They see only what they want to see, what drives them crazy,
That thing that’s not quite beauty.
Eros cries, tears from the blindfold,
As she does what she has always done:
Undoing the tangles of mortal love.
