Corporeal

 

Between the planar surface

and inhaled underbelly

of an abandoned bridge,

 

vacuous archways linked

by bronchial passages breach

the body of concrete

with bilateral symmetry.

 

The ribbed rooms’ ceilings seem

to swell as their channeled floors

follow the parabolic curvature

to a central steeping pylon.

 

Within its vaulted chamber

those arterial grooves drip

slow starlight, but an unblocked

oculus breaks the black

 

with moonbeams cascading

upon wrought iron rungs

tinged orange and red, igniting

breaths hung in the damp air

at the bottom. There

 

in a littered rivulet

a pair of sneakers splash

and squeak and scrape for purchase

 

as their squatting owner, weary

but hyperaware, struggles

to stand on slanted ground

 

and leans to grope and probe

the cistern’s upward slope,

 

to study and test its wet and grit

 

with bloodstained outstretched fingertips

vibrated by fading pulsations.
