UPDATE: I don't vent very often, but I was REALLY pissed off today
TL;DR: My former friend unfriended me because I talk negatively about his church once a month. I blocked him because he looked down on me.
D sent this to my wife:
To u/Gileriodekel: Bro I want to always be your friend. I'll admit it probably wasn't the smartest decision to unfriend you but it's been hard to see you fall away from the church which is whatever. Your choice I'm not not your friend for that but it just was hard to see you attack the church. I'd rather just be friends and not see the attacks so that I don't keep getting mad about it if that makes sense
Here was my response:
D, I waited for you and your wife outside the temple. I could have shown up when it was supposed to end, but I wanted to make sure I was there for you right when you guys came out. I wanted to support you. Do you have any idea how uncomfortable being there was for me? People were saying to me “Someday you’ll go in” when my wife and I already had. People were looking down on us, but I held back everything I wanted to say. It was one of the most uncomfortable things I’ve ever done, but I stuck it out because you were my friend.
D, I censored the crap out of my Facebook page. I am literally about to publish “The Brutally Honest Mormon Coloring Book”. Roughly 10,000 people have seen it, and its sort of a big deal. Do you know how many times I mentioned it on my Facebook? Not ONCE! I created a spreadsheet comparing the church’s humanitarian aid to the cost of a mall the church built. The spreadsheet has become the go-to for comparing the two. Do you know how many times I mentioned it on my Facebook? Not ONCE! I have become a decently well know Exmormon, can you tell me exactly what absolutely slanderous thing I’ve said on my Facebook? Now. How many times have you expressed pro-LDS views on Facebook? Did I ever “persecute” you?
D, I am not going to censor myself. Friends aren’t really friends if that friendship is conditional upon censorship. I have decided I’m not going to censor what I say to prevent upsetting people. My friends will rather tolerate what I have to say, unfollow me, or unfriend me.
D, you were the one who couldn’t handle even light criticisms of your own faith. This world is a tough one. Every thought and belief is challenged, and it should be. CES Director J. Reuben Clark said it best when he said “If we have truth, it cannot be harmed by investigation. If we have not truth, it ought to be harmed.” If what I am saying is such a blatant lie, prove it wrong. If you can’t prove what I say wrong, maybe you should give what I say a bit more merit.
D, you were one of my closest friends from high school. You, Z, and our other friends were my guys. You’re the only one that is still around. I was SO excited for you to get home from your mission so we could hang out. When I left the church, I feared you wouldn’t want to be my friend anymore. We literally only talked twice after your wedding. I hoped that we just were friends that didn’t talk or see each other often, even though we live less than 20 minutes away from each other. However, instead of turning the other cheek, proving me wrong, or even just talking about it, you decided the best option would be to unfriend me. Having my friends and family no longer wanting to associate with me was one of my deepest fears, and it came true when you unfriended me.
D, all I want is to be treated how I treat others. You treated me badly in my eyes. If we’re going to remain friends, we’re going to have to figure out a balance. If we decide we can’t find a balance, we should part ways.
