Character & SSB evaluation: Mages & Supports

We're finally getting to the real meaty topics.

There are three main criteria I'm looking at when evaluating characters.

  • Skillset: What skills can this character bring to my party? Can they cover multiple roles or do they only stick to one niche?

  • Equipment Options: Good weapon selection is more important than good armor selection. For physical characters, access to swords is make or break, everything else is icing on top. For armor, all fighters can equip bracers, but having access to shields, and to a lesser extent, helms, is nice.

  • Soul Breaks: We're assuming that you'll be bringing characters who have soul breaks in your party. Even though most players will likely not have any one specific soul break, I want to evaluate characters at their highest potential, so that we have a better idea of which relics on which banners to shoot for.

I'll be going through the characters by ability class, and will only be covering the most relevant ones for each class. (Do note, I’ll be ignoring record dives for the most part.)

So without further ado.

#White Mages Wht 4 for Curaja, Protectga, Shellga, Slowga. Wht 3 for Curaga, misc. utility spells.

I’m not going to go into too much detail splitting hairs over their differences. While having extra skillsets is nice, White 4 is usually good enough since most of the time you’re bringing Curaga/ja and a utility spell. Ideally, you’ll either be bringing Y’shtola with SSII, or a white mage with a medica. Yuna's and Lenna’s Cura (h50) + Heavy Regen is generally considered the best out of the current medicas. Out of the Curaga (h85) medicas, Selphie’s and later Rosa’s Curaga + Magic Blink is generally considered the best. Relm’s Curaga + Heavy Regen would probably come in second. The Cura (h50) + Reraise SSBs aren’t that great comparatively, since you don’t want your characters to die in the first place, but they’re still perfectly adequate medicas.

If you have a Cura-level medica, do you need to upgrade to a Curaga-level one? Not really, at least, not yet. Cura medicas are perfectly fine in most cases. Curaga ones of course heal for more, which may or may not come in handy given the situation.

#Black Mages

Bringing a black mage is not recommended, this is a Scream guide after all. Blame DeNA for keeping Black Magic stagnant.

#Summoners Sum 4 for Maduin, Carbuncle, Ultros.

Useful for AoE fights, especially after the buff. Also avoids counters. Otherwise, Dark Zone is better for single-target bosses.

#Dark Mages Drk 5 for Memento Mori + Dark Zone.

Out of the mages with Darkness, Vincent, Edea, and Kuja all appear with their MC2 immediately, while Exdeath just got his in JP. Kefka and Golbez are still waiting (and will have lower MAG at Lv80). Since you're bringing them for Memento Mori + Dark Zone, other skillsets are irrelevant (the only exception is Vincent's Sum 4, so you could Memento Mori + Maduin for AoE fights.)

  • Vincent: His cloak gives himself a stacking ATK/MAG +35% boost, but you won't be doing much damage with the SB since it's physical.

  • Edea: Her headpiece has really good stats, but the soul break for it is the same as Kefka's (Haste+MAG 20%) which is nice, just not for Scream teams.

  • Kuja: His SB does AoE dark dmg and gives him En-dark which makes his Dark spells (Dark Zone) deal 50% more damage.

  • Exdeath: Only just got his MC2 in JP. He has a single target version of Kuja's En-dark SB. He's an odd one in that he can't equip hats, which is actually a pretty big downside for a mage.

  • Golbez: His Ebon Armor does boost Dark dmg, but only he, among the Dark Mages, can equip it, so given his lower MAG, it may only bring his Dark Zone damage up to par once he gets his MC2.

The nice thing is that these are all regular SBs and thus appear at a 2% rate on their respective banners. Kuja's and Exdeath's En-dark SB's are probably the best in conjunction with Dark Zone. But honestly, mages have a hard time charging up SB's. By the time they build up enough gauge, the boss may very well be close to death, so SB's aren't as important for them. You can refer to u/Zurai001's video here against U+ BFA, where Vincent only builds up his SB near the very end, and doesn't get to cast it.

As you can see, Memento Mori's 45s Doom isn't an issue, and can actually be considered helpful in providing an onscreen timer to track your buffs/debuffs.

#Supports
Sup 5 for Full Break. Sup 4 for Breakdowns. Sup 3 is pretty useless.

  • Ramza: The metachanger. I wouldn’t be writing this guide if this little guy didn’t come parading into FFRK with his screaming and shouting and cheering. Who does he think he is exactly? In all seriousness though, besides Sup 5, he has Cmb 4 for Lifesiphon, Knt 4 for Banish Raid, Nin 4 to apply sleep, he can equip swords, and unlike other Sup 5's he has frontline fighter stats, not to mention, his screaming and cheering.

  • Tyro: If you have SG, he may be your go-to support or white mage. He also gets a very good BSSB in the Burst Fest four months from now. As usual, low stats, but the best skillset and equips.

  • Faris: She just got a BSSB in JP that applies Full Break (the first BSSB to have an extra effect in its initial soul break). She has access to swords and a diverse weapon and armor kit. Her ATK is high for a support, but still support level. She can use 4* Dances and Thief's Raid.

#Dancers Dnc 5 for Break Fever. Dnc 4 for Breakdown dances.

The AoE version of Support. Useful for AoE fights, or if you want to avoid counters.

  • Cait Sith: The best Dancer in JP currently. He's literally Mog, on steroids. Good stats, Lv 80 (Mog is still 65), and he has Sum 4, so you can give him a Dance and a Summon to deal AoE damage. His regular SB is actually more useful than his SSB since it provides an AoE offense breakdown (ATK/MAG -50%) for a 3rd layer of debuffs whereas his SSB overlaps with Break Fever.

  • You can always use Tyro.
