Gross Beat Sidechain

Hi everyone,

With the LFOtool and Volumeshaper plugins you can set the volume/ducking envelopes to be triggered by MIDI notes.

Is there any way to achieve this in Gross Beat, as opposed to using the standard 4 on the floor sidechain preset? It ain't immediately apparent to me and I've done some searching but to no avail :(

Cheers!

You wanna use Envelope controller. Activate the "tempo" sync if you must and map the needed channel volume to that. Then play a MIDI note on that every time you want it to trigger.

I'm gonna do my best to answer. But I'd like you to ask yourself what you want Gross Beat to do if you trigger it "On" by a MIDI note? Turning it on or off via MIDI is pretty straight forward, but the question is, what program would you have it perform? Basically, what I'm saying is, why not have it be controlled by an envelope so it's on or off when you need it?

AFAIK, Gross Beat cannot operate dynamically based on sound from another source. That basic 4 beat sidechain preset is only a volume limiter. It has nothing to do with the input you are trying to bring forward in the mix.

From my experience, your best best for sidechaining is using the Fruity Limiter and sending your kick (or whatever you want controlling it) directly from the Mixer. It's so easy to tweak that on the fly, and works perfectly.

Sorry, I'll try word it a little more clearly. What I want to do is to draw an envelope of some sort in, say, slot 1 in the volume section in gross beat. Then place gross beat on a bass mixer track as an effect. What I was wondering was if I could use another channel or track's input to activate the envelope in slot 1 every time the source signal was played.

With volumeshaper you can hook the plugin up to a midi port that's connected to a midi OUT channel generator. You can clone the midi OUT channel to duplicate the kick, for eg. The midi OUT track then ducks the bass in accordance to the kick pattern (I hope that made sense).

But I guess if gross beat doesn't accept any type of input signal it won't work :(

I've been using the limiter for sidechaining quite some time now but I find volume shaper to be much more precise and flexible. I've only got the demo so I thought if I I could achieve all this in gross beat then I could save some money.

Yeah, I don't think gross beat is capable of acting like a limiter. There's a lot of good ones out there, just not Gross Beat.

I fkn LOVE Gross Beat though. When you custom tweak the envelopes, you can hammer put some serious control of your sound. Imma drop this here.

All that nonsense noise on the high end is being controlled by Gross Beat patterns I created. It's such a super plugin. OK, enough self promoting.

I don't have experience with volume shaper. I've only ever use Fruity Limiter for sidechaining. Including the song I posted. Cheers!

Thanks! It took me a while to fully appreciate that plugin. It's so versatile.

Do you have a time in the track we should pay attention to? Only thing im hearing throughout is a sidechained white noise unless thats what u mean?

Every time the kick hits, the bass, the synths, and most any other noise is sidechained. Subtly.

you can control which envelopes grossbeat uses via midi notes, but as to your initial question, no.

That's a shame :( Thanks for the heads up!

I love gross beat, maybe I'll buy it someday. Sucks I can't save projects with it... Does it ever go on sale?

Not sure. Maybe end of year sales? It came with FL when I bought it.
