Romantic happenings of the Sahaba (love & loss) - the story of Abdullah ibn Abi Bakr & 'Atikah bint Zayd [part 1]

Islamic Study / Article

Abdullah (son of Abu Bakr) was married to the beautiful 'Atikah bint Zayd and she overwhelmed him - he fell so deeply in love with her that he began to neglect his duties in battle. I've read in some places that he even started missing congregational prayers at the mosque. It became clear to Abu Bakr that his son believed her to be the most important thing in the world to him; he noticed this out-of-character behaviour and told his son to divorce her.

At first, he resisted. He was torn between staying faithful to his love and submitting to the command of his father. Eventually, they divorced and Abdullah was heartbroken. He was heard reciting the following verses of poetry about her (A'atik is the pet name he uses/term of endearment):

أعاتك لا أنساك ما ذر شارق ... وما ناح قمري الحمام المطوق

أعاتك قلبي كل يوم وليلة ... إليك بما تخفي النفوس معلق

ولم أر مثلي طلق اليوم مثلها ... ولا مثلها من غير جرم تطلق

لها خلق جزل ورأي ومنصب ... وخلق سوى في الحياة ومصدق

A'atik, I will never forget you as long as the sunrise continues to shine bright,

And as long as the caged birds bask in the moonlight.

A'atik, my heart yearns for you every day and every night,

With the unknown mysteries to which the souls hold tight.

Never have I witnessed the likes of me divorce the likes of her,

Nor have I witnessed the likes of her getting a divorce she didn't incur.

To beautiful manners, profound insight, and nobility she adheres,

She is one with the utmost beauty in the world and sincere.
