Fried my DX7 yesterday. Recommend replacement TX?

General Question

Title says most of it. I know I can get an OrangeRC Tx module for DSM2 and put it on a 9X/R, but maybe I can ditch DSM altogether and go with a different PPM signal.

What are your thoughts on price, features, and hackability?

If you are spending the cash for a DX7, Maybe consider the FRSky Taranis. I'm sure many others will comment and agree. Fantastic 2.4, super cheap receivers, and lots of cool and usable features.

I spent the cash on it 5 years ago. I fried it trying to fix it, and now I'm looking at transmitters. At the time, Spektrum was the choice. Now, I want input.

FrSky Taranis all the way. Got rid of all my Spektrum stuff 3 years ago and couldn't be happier. Reliable signal, voice alerts, inexpensive receivers and telemetry modules, expandability.

price, features, and hackability

That sounds like a Tranis - but we have a few people in our club who bought them on the recommendation of the experts and find them too complicated to programme because there are so many options. Now they bring them to the experts whenever they need a setting changed. If you just fly regular models you might be better with something simpler. OTOH if you want to hack it, it's perfect.

There are a ton of YouTube tutorial videos for the Taranis - I especially like the ones from Painless360's channel.

Even so, I don't find setting up a basic model on it to be all that difficult, and using OpenTX Companion on a Mac or PC connected to the transmitter is even easier.

Taranis sounds like it's going to be my next radio. How are the gimbals for smoothness?

The gimbals are much nicer than those found in the 9X[R[Pro]] radios.

What makes you think your DX7 is fried?

He "fried it trying to fix it" whatever that means.

It turned on before, it doesn't now.

I was replacing a bunch of stuff. Broken throttle hold, gimpy trainer port, external antenna (U.FL to SMA connector), old battery, etc. External power polarity got mixed, and now it no worky.

I reversed polarity once on a DX7. Turns out there's a fuse in there.

It may work again with a new fuse.

I'll run a continuity test on the fuse, but it appeared unburned.

Edit: Yeah, the fuse is unbroken. Time to scrap it and get a Tx that isn't an expensive, proprietary mediocre product.

I just like to fly. I'm very impressed with the Taranis. It really seems like there isnt anything you can't do with it. But, the learning curve is steep and I barely have enough time to fly and maintain my quads and planes, much less learn OpenTX. If I had the time, I'd probably go with the Taranis... but I recently upgraded to the new DX7 gen 2, only 260 shipped with a HH coupon. Sold the included AR8000 and was only $185 out of pocket. Honestly? the DX7 feels plastic-y and cheap compared to my old DX7S. But, all the features, like voice and wireless trainer are pretty nice.

Hard to beat Deviation on a Devo 7e in price-perfomance-hackability.

Agree that Taranis is a nice transmitter.

Like others, the Taranis is where it is at.

Taranis, then build a spektrum box so you can still use your old DSM2/DSX receivers.

Taranis is so much nicer of a system once you learn how to program it.
