There are 3 decent moves for Black in this position: Bc5, Nf6 and Be7. Mine favourite is Nf6, Two Knights Defence.

I don't play it as black but I have played it with white. I loved getting Bc5 against me, when I would reply 4.b4 Evans Gambit. Although I felt Nf6 was more common where I would reply 4.Ng5, because the Giuoco Piano is so boring. 3..Nf6 is the main reason I stopped playing Italian.

Try 4. d4! instead of Ng5.

I actually play the Scotch now, because I thought the Ruy Lopez would mean too much catching up at this point. I never played the Scotch gambit but I have thought about it, might try it in some internet games first, thanks for the advice!

Np. D4 recommendation is for the 2 knights defense btw not ruy lopez. So after 3. Bc4 if your opponent goes Nf6, look up lines with 4. D4

I don't play e5 usually myself, but in blitz and vs friends at university Ill on occasion play the traxler 3. Bc4 Nf6 4.Ng5 Bc5!? intending things like Nxf7 Bxf2+ with extreme complications. While it might not be completely sound, you shouldn't worry about that until you are much much stronger.

If you want to avoid sharp lines, Be7 would be the best reply followed by Nf6 and castle

3...Bc5 is the Italian and the most popular on all levels. All pieces are developed to natural squares. You will need to be prepared for 4.b4 (Evans Gambit), for 4.c3 Nf6 5.d4 (Greco Gambit) and 4.c3 Nf6 5. d3 (Giuco Pianissimo). Neither are very scary.

3...Nf6 is the Two Knights which gets sharp after 4. Ng5. You really have to know what you are doing and in the Main Line (4....d5 5. exd5 Na5) you are a pawn down with somewhat dubious compensation.

3...Be7 (Hungarian) does imo not fully equalize and I would not recommend going into that as your main reply. You are passive and behind in development in most lines.

lolwat

Then why is 4. Ng5 never seen at the top level against the two knights defense (I have 1 game from a 2700+, Morozevich... and 21 where 4. d3 was played). This myth needs to stop. Unless you're a complete beginner you'll have no problem in the Fried Liever or whatever it's called.

There are more than 1000 top-level games including Short-Kasparov, Zhigalko-Karjakin and Ivanchuk-Beliavsky, Radjabov-Naiditsch

Black scores pretty well in these games.

Unless you are a complete beginner, you don't play Nxd5 and allow Fried Liver Attack...

Some people call 4. Ng5 the Fried Liver so I'm confused. I was obviously talking about the Na5 line.

The 4. Ng5 line is known as the Polerio attack.

There's no myth. The Fried Liver (which is 4...d5 5.exd5 Nxd5?! 6.Nxf7!?) is very risky for Black and White scores around 75% in my database. Besides that White has the even better 6.d4! with the idea of 6...exd4?! 7.0-0 which is probably already winning for White. This has been known for a long time. That's why the only serious move is 5...Na5. This is playable, but top players very rarely go here, for good reason, Black is pawn down and has to prove compensation!

At the highest level nowadays 3...Bc5 is almost universally played.

Or Black can play 5...Na5. Black will be a pawn down but the compensation is very good.

3.. Nd4! Blackbourne shilling gambit :D

I wonder how long i can get away with this until everyone i face knows how to refute this.

I mean you could just play for the scholars mate every game as white, and if they allow the mate hey you won, but what have you learned? If they don't allow the mate then you're simply giving your opponent an easy game for nothing. It's good to know traps since the ideas can pop up elsewhere, but 3..Nd4 is not a "!" move, it's a "?" or "?!" at best and only serves to stunt your improvement.

Its was more like Nd4! /s than Nd4!.

I know its not a smart choice but its my guilty pleasure of chess openings.

Frankly I don't like playing ANY of the "open" defences as they are passiveand timid.I would prefer to learn any of the semi'open games or at least learn the Petroff Defence. But in the end you will need to learn the Sicillian at some point if you ever want to be competitive.
