What's it like when you fail a squat?

46 year old noob here. I've been at it for a few months. Squatting 185 lbs now.

I haven't failed a squat yet, although I deloaded a couple times to work on form. (As opposed to OHP, which I fail almost every workout).

I saw Mehdi's video of failing a squat, and that didn't look too bad. Is that how it usually goes?

Somehow when I'm squatting it feels like failing would be catastrophic. Just want to hear how it usually goes for people, do you get used to it, anything to watch out for, etc.

Yes I'm using a rack.

Thanks!

It looks like you're trying your absolute hardest to stand up and just can't. You get stuck mid-squat and, in my experience, I pitch forward and don't keep form. Or, I just straight up sit down and rest the weight on the side rails of the rack because I just can't get up without keeping form. That's a fail.

Everyone should practice failing with light weights. Failing at your maximum weight is not the time to figure out how to do it.

I will not squat without something to catch the weights if I fail the lift. Right now I'm using some sawhorses that I have set about 1 inch below where I normally squat.

Set the safety bars just below the position of your bar position at the bottom of your squat, and failing is quite simple and safe. Failure will likely occur as you are coming up from the bottom position, so all you need to do is gently set the bar down onto the safety bars by going down a little past your natural bottom...

Typically, if I fail, it's at the bottom of the squat. You'll get set up, lower the weight, and either up a few inches or not at all. If you've got spotters, they can help. If not, and you have your rack set up high enough, you can set the bar down there. If no rack, learn to dump it behind you.

It does feel like it would be, but its not that bad if you have things setup correctly or know what to do.

If the rack you are using has the safety bars, make sure they are set to the correct height. As u/stasmatix said, when you fail you typically fail close to the bottom of the squat. When it happens, just lower the bar down as controlled as possible.

If the rack doesn't have safety bars, then I would squat outside of the rack and be prepared to dump the weight behind me. I don't like having a spotter behind me. If I have 300+ on my back and my legs don't want to cooperate, I would much rather get out from under the weight rather than risk injury to myself or others. I have seen people fail when they had a spotter, they panicked and dumped the weight onto the spotter. Luckily the person squatting was a young lady doing a light weight and the guy spotting her was no stranger to the gym. He was able to catch the weights but the potential for bad things was there. Depending on your gym, it could be difficult to practice dumping the bar. Many places have a no drop policy and no bumper plates.

If my stomach loses its air and I feel my back round, I drop. Too many years living with back pain to want that last one

Thanks all. I have tried failing with lighter weights, but it only feels like a simulation. I'm all set with the safety bars being at the right height, so knowing that the failure will happen near the bottom makes it sound a lot better.

knowing that the failure will happen near the bottom

It typically does, but not necessarily. If you feel yourself failing near the top of the squat, you basically need to throw the weight backwards as best you can while stepping forward. Better that than collapsing under the weight.

When I fail I just sit down and let the safety bars catch the weight. But lately I've felt when I didn't have another rep left in me and just racked it after the 3rd or 4th rep because I hate unloading the bar to get it back up.

Of all the exercises, this practice seems wise for squats.

i failed 2nd set squat at 192lbs but went on to do the rest fine. It felt weird but relieved as squat was getting heavy as fuck..a little bit awkward to fail too at first.

It's not too bad. The way you hold the bar, it's easy just to open up your fingers and let yourself fall a couple inches onto your ass while letting the weight roll off behind you.

If you don't already squat ass to grass (some people would get pissed at me for doing this) let yourself go down as far as your legs let you go and dump the weight.

I don't have any safety bars so this was my only option when I failed the first time

I fail forward. Every time. Mutter "Fuck..." and roll the bar over my head on the safety pins and uncrumple myself. The worst part is unloading the bar to put it back up. I just feel like a small child failing, on a stage, too weak to win, even though it's 45s I'm pulling off the bar.
