[F4A][Cabins] Pitter Patter
We’d finally scrounged up enough free time to book a weekend in the woods, high up along the mountain tops in a luxury cabin. Whilst both of us were comfortable camping out and having a few less conveniences than the modern world offered, it was agreed upon that electricity and hot water were not to be forgoed. Armed with a only the clothes on our backs, and a couple supplies we carried with us, we set out on foot. There was the option of simply driving, but lost in the spur of the moment we made a foolish decision to hike from the bottom up. Only a couple kilometres, nothing too bad... right?
We took our time despite the darkening sky, putting misguided faith in the weather report - it was merely going to be overcast. It was a comfortable silence, neither of us speaking as we took in the gorgeous views presented from the varied terrain, mountaintops dusted at the top in white and the evergreen valleys that never seemed to end. On occasion, we’d catch a glimpse of some woodland critter, breaking the rhythm of trees. It wasn’t till the last kilometre left in our journey that the sky decided to voice its opinion, grumbling at us young lovers for having taken our time on the ascent.
We hurried along like chastised children, working up a sweat as the crispy air became frigid at the impending storm. Three weeks, we’d planned this for 3 weeks and just when we get here it starts to rain us in… I pushed the dark thoughts away. There was still hope, albeit as faint as the dim lighting that blanketed the range, that perhaps the storm would not last.
The first few drops began to fall as we hastily stumbled into the the wooden shelter, huffing and puffing and drenched in sweat, we broke into laughter at our near escape. The storm kept brewing, but within the warm walls of our oakey enclosure we gave it not a second thought. With our bags placed down leaving the unpacking for the future where we’d be sure to complain about procrastination, we hurried to the shower to clean ourselves off.
The storm wouldn’t let up.
Under the covers, the late afternoon sun hidden behind a shroud of ashen clusters and waterfalls of water we lay. I’d left some windows open, the lovely smell of the downpour wafting through and filling the room. Neither of us had turned the lights on, only the sombre ambience and frequent flashes of lightning to give way to the dreary day. Droplets clung to the window, racing down against one another as time passed with you beside me. It could be worse, I thought, rolling closer to you to siphon off more of your heat, at least the blankets are thick.
Skin against skin with nothing to do, I turned my head towards you, a timely bolt striking the earth to illuminate my features for you. The sultry smile of suggestion could not have been missed, even if it was, my hands gave clear signals as they strayed.
